Fitting air filter box
« on: October 31, 2006, 08:58:41 AM »
Anyone got any tips on fitting the air filter box to the carbs on a K1 750. It seems the devils own job to get the 4 rubber pipes evenly onto the carbs and I've given up for the moment. Have tried warming then up and even lubricating them with washing up liquid to help them slide on - all to no avail...

If the airbox doesn't go on easily, the carb to airbox rubbers are old and hardened.  I suggest buying new ones.  They will make it easier to hang the carbs and will seal like they are supposed to.  They don't cost that much and they will last another 30 years or so.

I completely agree about the hardened rubbers. I changed mine (can be bought cheaply at David Silvers Spares - when you consider the price versus ease of use its really worth it) and difference is amazing.

Thre are a few tricks in this delima.
I have done this a few times and one noticeable thing is that the tubes have a top and a bottom. The long line is the top. This way they can be fitted to the carby throat flange and then its reasonable to either heat up the tubes using an heat gun do not do them too much as they will end up as toast
Use Vaseline (NOT Washing up detergent) or heat them up and soak them in ATF.
But if you use method of pushing the for tubes on together use the top half of the box to do the work
2/ Use the pull them all out of the air box and then fit them to the carbys indivudally then heat the flutes up then they will simply slip back into the air box easily Lube the flange first
Take the tank off!

Bingo! There is a top and bottom. Look at the ends carefully and turn them as you do, you'll notice it.

I would still vote for new ones though.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Pete.
Only too happy to help with my delima's problems and how to fix them.
Also another tip turn the clamps two up two down Middle 2&3 & use a good phillips head screw driver, bastards of things when worn Maybe replace the screws also.

How did you heat them up??

I found dropping my old hardened ones into a bucket of boiling water softened them nicely, and then a thin film of Vaseline on the inside or the boots and the outside of the carb mouths helped a LOT.

This method worked without any problems. Air box is now fitting perfectly. Thanks Dave.
