Frank is right, you will need a wheelie bar to go 9's as VH did back in the 70's. And don't forget the endless testing and tuning. I wish anyone the best of luck with this feat, and it won't be done after just a couple test sessions. Those numbers were a result of years of experience and track time.

120rwhp from a NA sohc is a very tall order, its is no cake walk to reach those numbers with a 1200+cc Dohc. Also I understand the theoretical game, I have been playing it for nearly 40 years, it is not linear and as straight forward as some might think. My guess is more than 120rwhp will be needed to 9.7s.

Did they run those numbers on a sit up, stock cradle chassis or a laydown frame???

P.S. Actually this one is the Kawasaki Byron built for Terry to race in the 1976-77 seasons.  Still interesting...

Just because it's relevant, informative, and kind of funny. 8)   Story directly from a 1979 article with Byron Hines.

George.

Extra points to anyone who can name the guy who lost that combined $1000 bet that day, and came in as runner up.

Big hint, his initials are MB...

Bruso ran with no bars early on.  Was 1974 champ that way.  The short lived (less than a full season in 1975 only) Byron Hines built Pro Stock cb750 (1162) bike that Terry Vance ran had a short set of wheelie bars from the get go.  They sold them through the RC catalog as well.  I have a factory swing arm with a set of the original pro stock type triangular wheelie bar brackets welded on.

The wheelie bars themselves were fairly unique.  If anyone has a set, or knows where some are, I'd like to know about it. ;)

Mike,

120 RWHP N/A, assuming non methanol, yup.  Tall order I'd say.  I imagine the Byron Hines all out effort stroker big block, welded up head monster that Gary Pena ran 9 flat (N/A) with very little development time might have been in the neighborhood, but that's not exactly a typical RC type big bore motor built in someones garage.  Byron used a mountain of experience he has gained over the years on that motor.  Lots of flow testing, dyno time, high dollar modifications.

The Cycle X drag motor seems to be a similar type effort.

are those throttle bodies on that V&H pro stock cb750?

The RC Eng. Honda that Terry rode had Weber carbs.  Byron went with CR's on the Kawasakis.

Mike Bruso was running 10 flats with no bar....He threw bar on it and became the first official Pro Stock bike in the 9's.

To run quicker than Terry did on a SOHC should not be that difficult...but to do it at the same Pro Stock weight breaks and rules from the 75 AMDRA rulebook would be the bigger challenge!

The bike needed to be a certain weight (total weight, bike and rider) depending on the engine displacement.  Terry was very lightweight, so they were able to add the required additional weight down low and forward(next to the oil filter).  That was an advantage for them for sure.

Well to really beat the record you will need to run struts and that swingarm looks pretty short...probably 3 inches over..

As everyone can attest ,  Byron knows,..... I guess!  I'll be satisfied to try and break the record with a similar style bike, weight savings will be a big help. And yes a bar will prolly be needed! I went and hugged the Pena engine for you Jerry!
Plans are in the works for it also! Here's a color pic of TV's pro stocker!, Bill
