1977 CB550F2 SuperSport Exhaust Hole
« on: October 28, 2015, 07:00:51 AM »
I recently noticed a rusty hole in the underside of my back box (muffler, silencer etc) as it was spitting out a black mess on to the garage floor.

I was told by the previous owner that it's the original exhaust, the markings say Honda Sankei 2005. I assume it was manufactured by Sankei for Honda?

Are these still being produced..? If not, what are the alternatives? I've seen a few on eBay but I don't know what/who to trust.. they aren't cheap so I'd like to make sure my money is being well spent!

I've spotted the Carpy's Cafe Racer Yoshimura 4 into 1 system.. I'm from the UK so shipping is an additional cost. Are they worth the money? I'd be looking at about £330 all in all for that exhaust system and shipping.

I'm in the middle of giving her a 3k tune up so the carbs haven't been balanced yet, I'm gonna wait till I sort an exhaust so I can do all the needed service & upgrades to the engine then get it all set up properly.

Yes, the Sankei is original and getting rare to find in good cond.
I have the same system and have a small hole as well, I plan to repair it with JB Weld, high heat epoxy putty.

Carpys pipe is good, but very loud and may require rejetting to your carbs.

Good luck!

Okay cheers. & what if I don't want to veer away from the original look as she's 98% original, it'd be a shame to worsen that.

What are my choices now? If any?

I think I'm gonna have to import something & swallow any import tax costs.

Does anyone run/rate this..?

there is no exact replica of the OEM 4-1 exhaust. at least not that i know of.
if you change the muffler only, that's the cheapest way but it will definitely not look and sound original any more. as you're veering away from original anyway, i'd look for something that brings some improved performance at the same time. but that's my 2c, it's your choice of course.

I'm running the Cone Engineering Quiet Core slip on.
Outstanding construction and quality with enough back pressure you may not need to re-jet.
The only down-side is you'll have to have a mount tab welded.

I'm swaying towards the Core Engineering Stainless 'Quiet-er Core' or the Performance Cone mufflers.

What's size inlet do I require?

I'd take the muffler off and measure it but I'm 60 miles from my garage :(

Cheers.

I like the cones, they sound awesome.    Here is an exhaust that is pretty quiet and looks pretty good, too.

I love the look of the stock 550F header.  The sweep of the 4 pipes looks so cool.  That is the main thing I am going to miss when switching to the 650 engine.

Cheers all, I really appreciate the help & answers!

I'm new to Hondas & it's frustrating that I can't just nip out to the garage and check for myself.

That's what I need then yeah? Any other bits? Is it as simple as removing the old muffler and clamping the new one on?

I'm ordering from the UK so I've gotta make sure it's spot on & correct, I don't fancy any extra expense.

You may need a clamp and a mount. Personally, I would not buy from DCC, why not go to the source?
