A couple of months back I was crusing on the cb750 through a small long island town. I am stopped at a light and there are two kids hanging out on the street corner (probably about 12years old or so). Anyway, one yells out to me nice harley, and his friend smacks him across the shoulder and says "that's a honda dumbass" and then they both give me the thumbs up. I was dying laughing.
I don't know why people on message boards get so down on harleys all the time. They are good bikes for what they are. Personally I would rather ride a harley than one of the japanese cursier knock offs (star, volusia, VTX, etc..). What sells a harley is nostalgia. Even brand new they are old bikes, but they are meant to be old bikes - they are aircooled, they rattle, they vibrate, they give an overall vintage riding expirence. Ever ride an old harley? first off a new harley seems reasonably priced compared to the price of a restored pan or knuckle head. Second the modern materials make them more reliable than they have ever been, and leaps and bounds more reliable than 40's and 50's stuff.
