I finished the design for the new tabs for the retrofit of the bag mounts.  I will get the steel in the morning and get them made tomorrow, that's the plan anyhow.  I finished mock up on the trunk in its intended position.  I have to add a tab for the front mounting hoop to bolt to.

The front hoop mounting tab has to be used for 2 different trunk mounting positions, I will finish that tomorrow if there is time left.  I ran out of light today, but this is how the trunk will be mounted 90% of the time.  This will be my next push to get done but I have to finish the bags first.

Really bummed the brackets aren't a "bolt on" item but I know they will work for something in the future! Mock up using the GW brackets is looking good! That set up will add lots of comfort for those long rides across the desert as well as convenience for around town.  8)

They do bolt right up...just not with the stock exhaust.   ;D

THE BAG BRACKETS ARE DONE!!!

Made the brackets and welded them on...there is virtually no movement of the mounts now and everything works as intended...yeah!!  Done for the day, I think I'll ride tomorrow.

I went on a small 60 mile run with them and they worked great, no movement or noises.  I was concerned about them being that close to the exhaust but they never really got even warm to the touch, I checked them a few from city to highway driving.

Glad your engineering on the brackets worked well with no issues. Murphy lost one round!

They do look good.

While I love the lowered look and ride I will have to find or have new shocks built.  The 11.3" shocks were fine with it being naked, but with the fairing and bags there not up to the task even maxed out on the preload adjustment.  I ended up putting the stock shocks back on since all the short ones did was bottom out.  I would like to find or have built a set of 12" shocks  that can handle the weight.   :(

Were it a 550 those overbuilt heavily sprung inexpensive ones that ran about $70 around 7 -8 years ago might fit the bill.  They might have been 750 or 550 shocks...don't recall.  Or a good set of Goldwing shocks which are an inch longer than stock 750 shocks.  Have a set that were painted black I haven't tried.  They were deemed by most to be too harshly sprung and don't recall what was said of their rebound and dampening control other than save you money and pass on those shocks.

Given your big bottom girl you may wish to pick up or borrow a good set of  Wing Interstate shocks to try.  The Silverwing were air assist by 83 and GL650I.  Motor Era may have info or several of the Wing owners on the board may be able to help or advise you.  Would not suggest the GL650I shocks as by '83 the ProLink Mono-shock was being used.... ;D

Don't think you are looking to re-engineer the rear swing arm and subframe to adapt a ProLink or Monoshock setup on the bike.  The GL650I was a very soft comfortable ride but lacked ground clearance unless aired up and then it was comfortable but still soft, as intended.

BankerDanny, DonR, DHall are just a few of the  wing owners I can think of off the top of my head...

I will be looking into those options, thanks.  The stockers work ok for now but I want to get good shocks on the next go around and add brass swingarm bushings to bring her into the 90's.

I got the tune up finished up and went for a buzz and got caught in the rain, sure was glad I had a fairing.  She's running AWESOME, I still need to sync the carbs, but she runs better than ever now!!

Had a break in the rain so I started the mock up of the solo tour pack.  I have the rear support sorted out and know where I'm going with the front one but need to pickup a stick of tube to make it.  It's getting closer.....

So Monday I'm on my way home and I notice the blinkers are goin a little slow.  I added the volt gauge but the wiring to the fairing needs to be redone so it reads almost 2 volts shy of whats at the battery, I look down at it and its showin 10.1 and when I put on the brakes it drops into the 8's...PROBLEMS!!!  She barely made it home with 8 volts showing.

I got time today to see what was up and ended up replacing the alternator pigtail and going completely through the start/charge/fuse systems cleaning every connection along the way.  Then did a complete factory diag on the charging system to find the regulator was wacked out.  Let me tell ya adjusting the mechanical regulator is a PITA!!  Minor, minor adjustments changed voltage ALOT, and the cover made it drop 1/2 a volt at 4,000.  Finally got it adjust per factory spec at 14.14 volts at 4K.....WooHoo!!!!

The old pigtail......

You're much more diligent than I. I had to replace my relay with a digital relay to operate LED light signals and I long ago replaced the regulator and rectifier with a solid-state unit.

I would have done that also, but I have to see if the factory system will keep up with my needs, or if I need to do the 32amp upgrade.  If it does I'll go full electronic and it just may work out with the stock system since I'm going all LED.

Worked most of the day on my solo tour pack setup and am happy with the results.  I will have to ride around for a week or so with it to fine tune the position.  I only had 1 vinyl coated clamp the right size and need to pickup another, I had a rubber coated that I made work till I get to Lowes and grab the right clamp.  After that, I guess it's time to blow it apart and clean and paint.  My goal is to be able to pull the whole rear bag setup off as a unit by removing 6 bolts and 1 plug so I can go with just the fairing, or fairing and small bags.

I'd love to have a 32 Amp system for my 650! For a true touring bike like this it would be nice to run some accessories like a GPS and/or heated gear.

Yesterday I finally got time to buzz over to Ontario to get my extended brake hose made.  I went steel braid with it cause I have a line on a guy who makes Teflon lined, steel braided  throttle and clutch cables for anything.

I've had bars for a VN750 waiting to go on but I needed a longer brake hose.  Got that done today, they have an 1.5" more rise than stock and are little narrower.  Riding position is better but it's still not where I want to be, so I'm still hunting for the "right" bars.  With the more relaxed position now I got to move the tour pack back another 1/2 inch for a little more room.  Baby steps...but steps.

This is an awesome project to watch evolve, and definitely inspiring me.  Curious about the pelican cases you showed mounted earlier in the thread- do you happen to have any details on how you mounted those? I tried doing a google search of the forum on pelican cases since  the forum search is broken but was unable to find anything.

Site search engine is broken, you have to use Google search with the proper suffix:

put your search term here then follow it with site:sohc4.net

The Pelican bags were mine. I've been meaning to try and do a write up about the mount. Pretty simple really, took me two weeks to work out the design in my head and fabbed it up in an afternoon. Couple pieces of angle and a few pieces of 3/4" square tubing. A little all thread for good measure. Easily adapted to a more generic hard case if you aren't lucky enough to find Pelican cases for $25 each like I did.  ;)  No frame mods required.

Been tryin the way you recommended- just haven't had much luck.  i'd imagine the terms matter alot.

Either way I'll keep trying.  Did you just fab up mounts that mount to the top of the shock and then somewhere else on the bike- the light attachment point maybe?

This is an awesome project to watch evolve, and definitely inspiring me.  Curious about the pelican cases you showed mounted earlier in the thread- do you happen to have any details on how you mounted those? I tried doing a google search of the forum on pelican cases since  the forum search is broken but was unable to find anything.

Sorry missed your post.........did you mean these bags?
