Got a second pair of keihin 657a carbs, missing just about everything. I kept all of the parts from the 657b and plan to transplant those. From a post i saw, Hondaman said that the 657a and b are pretty much interchangeable they just got some minor exterior changes. Found a reasonable set for the right price because one of the float pillars on the 657b broke and tig cost just about the same as what i paid for this set. I will definitely be sending the broken body to jim french, but not quite yet!

Thought i would be having some extra time to work on the project but that ended up not happening... Got even busier with work... While ordering parts i overlooked the chains so when i sat down to start assembling the engine back together i had to stop. Went through the fiche one last time before reordering all the necessary parts so hopefully sometime in next few weeks the engine will be back together!
I decided i might as well refurbish the points and advancer. New condensers and a slight cleaning/greasing now allows the advancer to rotate freely!

Since i cant stand sitting around i guess its time to move on towards the part ive been dreading. Taking all the easy parts off and the front and rear suspension is soon to follow!

Looks like 77/78 triple trees , with a 74 tank they may be hitting forks to tank..

The way they were prior to removal, forks had decent clearance but it was definitely closer than i liked; might not even use them at all. Really leaning towards the gsxr conversion, hopefully they don't hit the tank. Can always mod the tank if they do. Ill read into it some more. Ive had to stop myself about 10 times already from ordering fronts because im not even sure how i want to proceed...

Get a hold of Bill Benton, he should have a good kill switch knob and other internals as well. These will clean up ok, but see if you can find non-rusted ones from him. Red vinyl dye or vinyl paint fixes that thing up nicely. For the housings, there is no match for what Marc/Powderman does with them IMO.

...Or split the housings and strip them, then have them hard coat anodized.

Definitely in desprite need of some new knobs and possibly internals. Will get ahold of Bill Benton asap. Hard coat looks amazing! Ill see if i can find somewhere in the LA area.

The last of the parts are arriving for me to assemble the engine, and a pile of misc bolts which i bought because i saw an alternator bolt slewn in the mess! Time to see how much can get done this weekend! Glad to know i have a few spare nuts and bolts just in case...

Transmission is reassembled and shifting/rotating smoothly. Thought I'd get more done haha but a few trips later to the auto parts store had the whole day gone! Tomorrow should go much smoother

Got mostly everything in today, still cleaning rods so when i put them on ill add the cam chain. Not too sure if the primary chains are supposed to go on in a certain direction or if that only applies to used ones, either way i put the new ones with green dots facing each other; in case i forget shouldn't be able to mess that up...

Are you using any assembly lube or is this just a mock up?

Everything is lubed up, except the chain probably put a little on when closing the cases

Got the shift assembly on and tested to see if anything is catching etc... Seems to be shifting through all five gears just fine, but every once in a while the drum won't want to move. This could be from not rotating the crank enough because if i apply some more force to the spindle, while rotating constantly, it will find the gear just fine.

Gsxr suspension came in, from what ive been reading cognito sells a stem conversion that should pretty much plug and play. Pretty excited to see it all put together... Eventually. Does anyone know if the steering damper is able to be used? *edit (found the answer)*
