Will checking exhaust header temperature help to tune???
« on: November 03, 2006, 06:23:56 AM »
I have an infrared thermometer and decided to check the temperature of each cylinder via the exhaust header.  I did this before I synched the carbs and before I got a Dyna.  I saw about a 25-40 degree difference between 1 and 4 versus 2 and 3.

Would this be a practical way to tune the bikes stochiometric ratio?

2&3 will always be slightly hotter than 1&4. You can get rough estimates of problems with infra red thermometer though. We use them to check for running conditions on multi cyl quite a lot.

Keep in mind that if your headers are chrome that the ir thermometer won't give anything close to an accurate reading.

Yes and no.....

Unless you know the precise temp produced by the desired air/fuel ratio on your engine.

Otherwise all you get is a comparison of the cylinders and an idea if your getting richer (colder) or leaner (hotter) unless you get way lean (then it gets colder again)
