gasket set
« on: November 11, 2015, 08:10:42 PM »
I am about to buy gasket set. Which one is the best to buy.  I spoke with the cycle x guy today and he said the mls head gasket is the way to go.  What are your thoughts? Thanks

Vesrah kit is also used often. I believe it's cheaper alternative for people on budget builds.

For a head gasket, in my opinion, nothing beats OEM which are still available. https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB550K-1978-USA/part_145066/

I recall Hondaman saying these have an adhesive that seals and cures once the motor is cycled and heated up.

I think that's the wrong way to think about it (not saying that's your thinking). If you're on a budget you wouldn't want to do it again if it leaks or blows.

lol.
I wouldn't call Vesrah a 'budget' gasket set, but there are more costly gasket out there.
I used vesrah on my F3 build, and still have no leaks.
Its all in the prep.

Has anybody used the gasket set from Cycle X with the added head gasket? http://www.cyclexchange.net/500-550-Hi-Perf.htm

I have used cycleX gasket sets for my last 2 motors, also used their MLS head gasket. I found the sets to be very complete and effective. As has been said already, prep is very important to prevent leaks.

I did use the top set for the F motor - especially liked the MLS head gasket.

I've used the Vesrah kit for everything EXCEPT the head gasket, where I used CycleX's MLS one. Like others have said, prep work is critical to prevent leaks. Branden's leak free top end thread is an essential read, be mindful of proper o-ring thickness and dowel pin height etc. etc. (easy to just have a checklist).

Anyone have any experiences with the NE brand kits? I bought mine from 4 into 1 for my 750K7 for about $50

I wouldn't either, ha. I used a Vesrah kit for the majority of my motor but oil seals and head gasket were OEM. My vesrah oil pan gasket leaked about 6 months later. I replaced it with OEM and it's golden. Other than that, zero leaks.

The majority of gasket 'kits' have shiitty pucks, if they have them at all.  Be sure and measure.
They need to be .040" thicker than the puck recess depth for a good seal (and you should still use sealant on them)

CB750:
Most important is correct o-rings. Even the 4 OEM o-rings for the cam towers can be too small. Check the stickout over the head. O-ring must be thicker to provide sealing pretension.
Rubber nickels under the towers too... seal with not hardening. All O-rings sealing the oil trasnport from where the oil lines are connected, oil pump and so on.

I have never had a bad gasket. Maybe valve cover gasket that is like thick paper. The greenish slick ones are better. Yamiya, NP (Noboru) are good.

I could not use CycleX MLS when the rivets keeping the sheets together were too thick and where located between the mating surfaces, head cylinder block.

Vesrah is OEM vendor for many parts to the old CB, right?

MLS must have really flat and smooth surfaces, right?
