Terrible, terrible news, prayers go out to all of France . I have a son and daughter in law that live in Paris and got a call from them today (thankfully) and they are Ok. They spent about 4 hours in the basement of a restaurant near the theatre. My daughter in law is quite upset, but unhurt. Ironically, I also have a son who is an Air force pilot and is currently deployed to the Middle East. I never thought that I would be more worried about the one in France than the one in the desert. It is a sad day.

Agree and I hope your son and daughter in law are Ok, and remain so. Sadly, now, everybody is in the front line. These bastaards don't give a toss, for sure they killed some Muslims amongst their many innocent victims last night, in the name of their prophet. To make a point ? Terroism is just vile. Fixed my neighbour's computer today - they are Muslim and shocked.

All of France is hurt today.

News is coming through of the first confirmed Brit to die in the attacks, a young man selling merchandise at the theatre. He originates from Colchester which is a ten minute drive from me. Although I didn't know him, it feels kind of personal knowing how close his family are and the grief they are feeling - I can relate to their pain with acuity. Once the shock-factor wears off from these attacks and others like them, when these kunts pat themselves on the back for a job well-done and move on to plan more massacres of innocents elsewhere, this is what they leave behind without a further thought. So far, 128 grieving families and counting.
These people are worse than animals. Apparently at least one of them entered France via Greece, using the cover of the movement of legitimate refugees from Syria. So another reason, for some, to argue against offering help to some of the most desperate and traumatised people in the world. Xenophobia or a justified view?
This is what these fcuktards want. Not content with murdering people they seek to divide, to encourage hatred everywhere. I would not normally advocate meeting violence with violence, but these individuals do not have any place in a civilised world and should be eradicated.

I am very sad to see this as is everyone else. This down right cowardly imo. The thing that is most frustrating with this type of action is that it is not like traditional war where both sides line up and shoot it out and declare a victor. It is just the killing of innocent people that have nothing to do with politics. Without the burden of governance they are free to roam around and behave like savages. A sovereign nation would never dream of attacking another sovereign nation as they know they would have alot to loose. What do these guys have to loose? They want a violent response to spread their gospel of hatred to recruit more fighters.

Let's hope the best peace makers among us are able to bring this abhorrent chapter in our lives to a close peacefully without more innocent people getting needlessly killed. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of France in this most difficult of times.

I would like to hear from a member in New Orleans as I don't trust the mainstream news media at all. I don't believe fox news or huff post. I am all for helping people who need it like defenseless women, children and the elderly, but the young men os Syria should be over their fighting for their country.

It is very easy for ISIS fighters to hide in the crowd of refugees and no one will know it until a bomb goes off. Keep the problem over there and let the men of Syria and Iran fight ISIS.

Allowing mass groups of people to migrate around the world will only spread this stuff around.

I agree with Cal. In a traditional war at least we know who and where we are fighting. Terrorism thrives in an uncertain climate of fear. Bringing male refugees of fighting age 18 to 45 into the western world only creates more uncertainty and fear as terrorist hide in the packs of refugees. Europe's open border policy from a security standpoint is a disaster.

Helping women, children, and the elderly is one thing, but the young men of those countries need to be fighting ISIS the same way my grandfathers both fought the Nazis in WWII.

@Cal, just to correct you a little bit, Muslim is not a religion, Islam is. Muslims are those who follow the religion of Islam, just like Christians are those who follow the religion of Christianity.

There is no arguing that these extremists need to be eradicated, but it is important to make the distinction between extremists and Muslims. With the former, you're talking about eradicating a few thousand (who desperately deserve it), while the latter, you're talking roughly 1.7 Billion (many of whom are also the victims of extremists).

I can't. I don't think anyone can. They've fled their country, so I doubt they're capable of fighting. They've fled to avoid getting slaughtered.

As for what the rest of the Muslim world is doing about it, I must admit it is regrettably very little.

Strange day here today. Most normal routines went by the board. Increased security at, amongst other places, schools like the one I work at. There are provisions that automatically kick in if the Vigipirate state is raised. A bit like defcon. No classes today, teachers were to devote all time to letting the kids express themselves as best they can and to give answers to any questions raised. I could hear what some of the kids (in the 12 to 16 age group) were asking, and it was clear that most of them just cannot understand what happened and why. Bear in mind that probably more than 20% of the pupils are in schools in this region are Muslim.
School outings are cancelled and there are parking restrictions near schools. And public markets have been cancelled for the time being.
As Cal says, these guys have to be eliminated at source. At the moment they can strike anywhere, and will, but killing groups of them, or having a group kill themselves after a massacre is just like chopping off one of Hydra's heads. Someone is going to have to go in to where they train radicalised young Muslims and stamp them out.
I sense there is an appetite in France to do just that.

A kneejerk, but possibly understandable reaction. But one that unfortunately is unlikely to offer a guaranteed solution.

I don't know how far back in history you have to go to understand this stuff, but the destabilisation of the middle east in the past few decades seems to me to be like the destabilisation of the balkans in the early 20th century. And that led to some schidt. I'm no expert, just musing, while we wonder here what in the hell might happen next.

The school principal came to me in a tizz this morning saying the school's security cameras have not worked in ages, could I have a look. This in a provincial south of France town of 7,000 people. People are scared.
