fuel injected supercharged resto mod cb550 track & street bike.
« on: November 15, 2015, 02:14:51 AM »
ok, i know the title sounds a bit like i am trying to do everything at once.. and that might be true..
bike is a 78 cb550k, 2009 gsxr front, hayabusa discs, Fox podium rear shocks, custom alu tank and seatpan, lots of modern electronics(motogadget) Microsquirt EFI.
the head is ported, and it has a stage 2 kit from dynoman(592cc)

this started getting wierd when i got the idea of setting it up as a supercharged bike, because i liked the mechanical challenge it presented.
in the past i have mostly been turbocharging cars, so this is my first Forced induction bike.
current trackday car is a 550 crank hp / 600nm 1.8 turbo miata, so i have a lot of experience boosting engines and make them last.

anyway, ill just post a few pics to show of the progress so far, let me know what you guys think.  :)

its still a work in progress, but its starting to take shape.

Boost! I'm going turbo. Happy to see a lot of builds utilizing forced induction. Cool manifold!

Modified stock manifolds. the runners will be cut to the correct lenght and fuel injector bungs will be welded in.

A friend of mine machined these fuel injector bungs for me. He also made a small post that will be used for the rear brake rod actuation.

Welcome. Your build is awesome. Had a supercharged 750 back in 78. Nothing like 10-12 lbs of boost to help things along! G'luck,  Bill

this is going to be tight..  i really want everything centered in the frame so the throttlebody will sit above the supercharger and inlet manifold.. soon to start welding up lots of tubes :).
was surprised to see that the stock throttlecable for the cb550 could be used as is.

My buddy started welding up the manifold parts i made.

fuel injector bungs, extended and smoothed the stock carb manifolds, and attached the new plenum chamber.
Staring to look like something.. can just about spot the Throttlebody above the supercharger too.

the supercharger is a Aisin amr500 unit. 500cc/rev  should be enough to give the little motor some extra punch :)

started making the intake pipes for the supercharger..
next up is attaching the throttlebody and air filter :) then some finishing touches on the inlet manifold.. then its "just" a matter of making the pulley/drive system for the supercharger.

got some more stuff done :)

Hydraflow connector between supercharger and inlet mayby? also.. throttlebody installed.

Made the rest of the intake tube before the throttlebody. took some time to get everything 100% but happy with the results.

had to make a brace for holding the front of the tube in place.

soon its "just" a matter of building the engine, and getting the frame painted and prepared  :)

Nice Project..............Have my own interest in building a similar unit for a CB750-based speed-trials bike. Are you sure the air-filter has sufficient flow capacity?

i am pretty sure it will flow enough. but it is very easy checking on the dyno with/without to verify when everything is finished :)

Small update, not a lot has happened. too much time at work and not enough time in the workshop.

Inlet manifold is just about finished, just needs a little more polishing.

Made a engine stand to make it easier to build the engine .

also, i didt not like that the carpy exhaust had no rear hanger, so i added that to it. my exhaust is also extended by 20cm from the stock carpy 4-1 setup, so it needs the extra support in the rear.
Tried making it som it follows the same "style" as the rest of my brackets and braces.

Also started on the wiring for the engine and ignition setup.
because this bike will be running a microsquirt ecu i needed a ignition driver and opted for a 2 channel "bosch" unit. I now have full control of ignition advance at any rpm, load etc..

This is how i solved the problem of getting the ecu to know what the motor is doing.  36-1 triggerdisc attached to the stock holder for the points. this retains all the factory ignition timing marks etc. and was by far the easiest way of making an easily adjustable holder for the hall effect sensor.

Next up is the pulley system for the drive of the supercharger.. and testing the electronic ignition/fuel injection setup :)
