Removing intake spigot
« on: November 03, 2006, 06:28:53 PM »
Well as long as I have been in this business, I thought I had seen and done everything. However, I got a new one for me.

Guy brings us a 750 block for an 836 kit, and two heads. One head is to be rebuilt, the other is a parts donor head.  The "good" head has #1 intake spigot missing. The guy wants us to get one out of the other head and install it. Never have done this. I see that it is threaded, so is it just a mater of putting a 36mm socket on the air impact wrench and pulling the trigger?

Do they come out pretty easy.

Thanks

Jay / APE

My 1972 needed a new one once and I ended taking a junk head to a machine shop to get it out. Mine were glued in. The thread is very fine. I have no idea how they got it out. I bungled one up bad trying myself. I would think some heat and a good fitting socket.

Funny you should ask this question Jay. I just got a head off ebay and the seller sent it with NO packing whatso ever...floating in a box. It destroyed #3 spigot. I removed it with propane heat (a good size flame) and a 6 point 36mm socket with breaker bar. The donor spigot came off the same way. You need heat...it didn't gall (in the past they have with no heat). I had my son hold the torch to it as I unscrewed it. After about a turn it came out mint...both times. I'll post some pics tomorrow.  PS....clamp the head to a steel bench or something similiar (though you probably figured that out anyway).
