Cam chain tricks?
« on: November 17, 2015, 08:27:11 PM »
Anyone know any tricks to keeping the cam chain from falling in to the crankcase? I don't have an overhead hook or money to spend on a fancy setup. Any DIY tricks?

I was looking at one in the garage I guess I could lay it on top of some bricks or firewood.

coathanger bent so it hooks where ever you want...you can drop it in there plenty, it's not going anywhere, you just have to make sure you don't kink it or jamb it when you fish it back out
If it works good, it looks good...

a long screwdriver through the chain. or tie it up to the upper frame tube with a wire or piece of string.

exactly!  - sometimes I just let it fall in (nothing bad's gonna happen!!) and hook it out later quite easily
(there is no problem with retiming the crankshaft/camshaft - the chain plays no part in it - the mark is on the camshaft not the chain)

^This!

A few zipties from the chain to the frame tube worked for me.

Yarp.

I used a bungee cord for a bit, then switched to yellow poly rope.

It won't go anywhere. You can fish it out with a expandable handle magnet.

Right, if its a CB750, don't sweat it. Just let it fall, and fish it back with a pencil magnet when you need to. Plenty of real things to worry about.
