CB 750 K0 — Me and the dog are building a bike. Finished!!
« on: November 21, 2015, 11:38:11 AM »
I went and did it, I bought a bike. I'm a newbie to this so any help from the forum would be greatly appreciated!

The pink slip says 1969, the frame number is in CB75010406XX range, the engine is in the CB75010701XX range. That's the first mystery for me, could this be the original engine?

I'm thinking it's not from the amount of customization that has been done to the bike. But I would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

It looks to be an aging cafe project from the 80s or 90s. I'm not exactly sure what is original to the bike, if anything? My plans were to try and get it up and running and back on the road, then decide where to take it as far as the build goes. That didn't go so well, the electrical was too far gone for my skill set, so I proceeded with the tear down.

Photos before I tore it down are here:

Were the frame rails already chopped out when you got it?

Yeah they were, same with the rear peg sections. Looks like and early mod, I've been reading about frame kits on the forum. I think I'll go with some of the clamps that TOOLS makes if he has any available...

Thanks TOOLS! I'll PM you and get a set when I get my parts list complete. BTW, is there a minimum length on the small side of the frame cut for the clamps to grab onto. Mine are 3-4 inches. Just curious.

I am not the tool guy..different kit.
You are probably ok on the front, depends f you want to run stock ignition switch under the tank.. Then you need  approx 3 3/4 on the left tube...measuring back from the weld... You are missing the middle brace though.. A bit of work to redo that but can be done..

Is the middle brace crucial with the clamp on frame kit? Looks like the PO was running it without one...

I think it would be better with the brace piece in there. From what I've gathered.....the old drag racers used to cut the tubes out and just leave it as is. That's probably OK for going in a straight line (I wouldn't do it). They probably wanted quick access to the top end. For a street bike that turns and bounces around it would be better on the frame to have the tubes back in.

Most of the frame splice kits come with the middle triangle brace piece, unfortunately it looks like yours was lopped off completely; so you'd have to weld tabs on either side to connect to. Carpy makes a kit that doesn't have the triangle brace at all.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I'll be going with one of Frank's kits. The bike came with the chopped pieces of the frame, pic below...

I'll be replacing the makeshift sleeves that the PO installed with Frank's.

It seems like there are differing opinions on weather the center brace is absolutely necessary. As for me, I'm going to err on the side of caution and weld the tabs back into place. As luck would have it I found a donor frame for free today so I'll get to work cutting it out and once I have the cross-members installed I'll weld it in place. Pics below...

Thanks agin for all the info.

I'm intersted in hearing opinions on the flat "Brat" style seats that seem to be very popular on these bikes these days. Pic below...

I'm considering one for my build which seems to mean that I'll need to chop the fender mount at the back of the frame. Pic below...

It looks to me like I'd be losing 4-5inches of tire clearance in doing so. Does anyone have first hand experience with this? Is your back tire hitting the seat pan?

Ive seen other options on ebay that aren't as thin but seem to keep the fender mount and tire clearance:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-1978-Honda-CB750-K0-K8-low-profile-cafe-racer-sport-seat-CODE-D1029-/111797923851?hash=item1a07acf00b:g:wQsAAOSwrklVN4F1&vxp=mtr

Any opinions on these? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

Dont toss the rest of that frame..... A few bits on there folks seem to need often..
Likewise keep anything you cut off yours, in case you want to put it back.

The brat seat is for looks-oriented riders.  It is NOT the most comfortable ride for any appreciable distance.  Do not compound the low seat with shorter shocks or you will have clearance issues and a rougher ride.  Also, if you cut the cross-member/fender mount, you will want/need to weld in a new cross-member or hoop the rear end -- to prevent frame twist.

Definitely good advice. I could use a few bits off of the donor frame if you're willing to cut and ship them.

Thanks for the info, sounds like the wheel rub isn't too big of a problem?

I figured as much about them not being comfortable, with how thin those seats are. This would definitely be an around town bike... I'll have to think on this one.

Progress for the day, frame brace cut out and ready to weld with a little filing.

I also went ahead and built an engine only work bench. I think I'll want the extra room, it feels like I'll be spending some time on the engine. I'll update everyone soon... little setback there.
