Swing arm greasing
« on: December 01, 2015, 08:29:23 AM »
This is for my F3.
I have always greased the swing arm with every oil change, never been a problem.
As I was trying to grease this time it was really difficult to get any grease in.
Any thoughts?

Is it full? Is the zerk obstructed?

Maybe time to take it apart and clean it.

Oil change every 1000 miles, I use whatever grease is in the gun, temperature was about 50 F.
I guess I should pull the zert out.
Could take it apart, the swing arm still is still good so I don't want to create problems.

what bike is this on? Is it the old style where you grease it on the outside of the bolt? Or the newer style with the zerk fitting on the underside of the swingarm?

If it's the newer style, just take off the zerk fitting with a wrench (it threads into the arm) and soak it in your choice of degreaser. Make sure it's not clogged.

edit: just saw you said F3. Then yeah you should be able to unscrew the zerk, inspect / clean it.

Is it full of grease?
In the past I usually grease it till a little comes out the ends.  Now nothing will come out either end

When I took the arm out of the K0, the grease holes were full of hard grease.    Every so often it is good to clean all the passages.

2wheels,

OK, given that you grease it every 1000 miles and that it is a bit cool out, it could be that the grease already in there has stiffened up a bit.

The grease you are using is a possible concern.  If you are using different types of grease every time you add some, maybe the new grease is reacting with a different type of old grease.  I know that is far fetched, but a slight possibility.

I would go with the suggestion to clean the zerk fitting and make sure it will pass the grease.

Also, you might want to take the bike for a ride and after the suspension has worked a bit, then see if the grease will flow in.  Based on the theory that if the swingarm has been worked it will warm up a bit and cause the grease to get warm and maybe loosen up a bit.

Just my thoughts, and what I would do if I had the problem.

I always thought it made sense to loosen the pivot bolt to allow the grease in easily.  Yours is probably full, I've known many who never grease the SA. If you loosen it up, you'll pump the old grease out and replace it with fresh.

Don't forget to retighten.

Winter is over and the  bike just came out of hibernation.  I bought a 23 mm socket and loosened the swing arm bolt up.
With it loose I could get grease in.   a lot of old hard grease came out.  Then the new grease started to come out.
Should be good now.  Thanks all.
