Another cb550f battery question
« on: December 01, 2015, 12:52:44 PM »
Hey guys and gals

So I was driving down the motorway today and one of my side covers came flying off, yep very annoying, I'm not too sure why it wasn't pushed fully in. Anyway,  I am going to use it as good excuse to open up that back section of my bike. I have some k&n filters in place, I just ordered the m-unit, now I just need to find a decent small battery. At the moment I do not have a start switch but hopefully that will change soon, so a battery that has another juice to turn the bike on would be great. I have been looking at the shore lfx14ls-bs12 is this a good choice? Is there anything better out there?

thanks
Lewis

Don't know if it's the best or smallest but I've had good luck with the Ballistic evo2 8 cell battery. I've run it on my dirt bike and more recently on the CB550F. With the CB stock battery bracket removed and a lithium battery you probably save ten pounds of weight.

wow thats great. So if i purchase these two, all I have to do is build a battery box and not making any plans over the weekend and I'm sorted right? Also, I purchased the wiring kit with the m-unit, so neaten everything up.

also, that eBay sale is legit right? It works out much cheaper for me to buy it from there than off the officials website.

I'm looking to open up that section of the bike, so I was going to place the battery (on its back), m-unit, reg/rec and start solenoid all in a tray under my new seat.

I am going to use the stock control for a little while, but maybe in the near future I will change this.

thanks for your help calj737, you have been amazing. I'm going to order those items now.

Hey Calj737

I have been reading that with my soon to be new set up, its important not to let the voltage of the battery go too low or too high. Some people have recommended purchasing a voltmeter for the bike so you can keep tabs on whats happening with that battery.

I am happy to install something like this on my bike, because it is small and also cheap, but what  would you do if you were out on the bike and you found the voltage to be getting too high or too low?

This is the voltmeter I'm looking at

You have been a great help. Thank you.

Final question (until the parts arrive and I start to panic), but can the battery, m-unit, starter solenoid and reg/rec sit in a tray/box together under the seat or do they need a little room to breath?

thanks

+2 on using a Lithium and a modern rec/reg for what you want to do. The combo has worked very well for me through multiple restorations.
