lesson learned the hardway
« on: June 01, 2005, 07:30:51 PM »
I couldn't get my magneto off the other day.  The 3-arm gear puller I had wouldn't budge it, so I borrowed an industrial size one from a local machine shop.  Well, it still was a pain in the butt to get off, and when it finally popped off, all of the rollers from the inside flew everywhere.

lesson 1:  don't let small parts fall to floor.

So I managed to find everything and put it back together (that took forever.)  Now that I'm in the rebuilding stage, I just went to thread the bolt back into the end of the crankshaft (so I wouldn't lose it), and low and behold, the bolt won't thread in.  Turns out, I got a little too gutsy while using that super-duper-industrial puller and managed to booger up the end of the crankshaft.  Now I have to plop down some dough to buy a specialty tap (12x1-pitch metric) just to get that stupid bolt back in.

lesson 2:  don't get gutsy, and pay attention to everything you do.

Chris, sound advice...  Sound advice.  My moto has always been:  "When you're reaching for the bigger hammer, reach for a Beer instead."  You may not not get it done tonight, but you'll feel better about not doing it.

Bobby, can I make your motto mine? How many times you lose patience and decide that the piece will go in or go out because nobody is more persistent than oneself, and we screw things because of not thinking outside the box.

When you use a puller ALWAYS protect the thread by putting a dummy bolt in the end of the shaft for the puller to push against.
