If I recall the gl1000 had a permanent magnet and there were issues with heat that caused the starter failure ... I may be completely wrong as I have never owned one or even ridden one more than a few miles

 The issue on  the GL is usually a melted/corroded connector that causes the alt. to overcharge. That melts the stator wire insulation.

Its been awhile but one of the members here Anders was messing around with this and i believe made a kit to convert to a modern 3 phase permanent magnet charging system derived off of some modern bike.
