Figured after your toils with the RR you'd be off BMWs forever Glad you've given them another chance to live up to your expectations.
I didn't have a choice. It was that or nothing. The extended insurance agreed to pay 5400 Euros (about $ 6,000) net for the repair of the RR. A new engine is 10,500 Euros. If the dealership puts in a used engine to stay within the $ 6,000 frame, I would have to give up all further warranty claims. Problems is: no dealer wants to put a used engine in because by German law, they then would have to provide warranty on the used engine for a year. Since my dealer knows that the replacement engine would not last that long, he kept delaying the repair (already more than four months), with no intention to ever do it. I asked the extended insurance to give me the money authorized for the repair--and keep the bike. No deal. I offered the dealership the bike with the approved repair costs of 5400 Euros for a total of 4300 Euros (thus, 1000 Euros less than the transferable and authorized repair costs). No deal. Only if I would buy another new bike but 2015 model (to get rid of an old model), would they give me $ 6,000 as a trade in--they having to pay another 25% on top of that as import tax because mine is a U.S. bike in Germany. So, either buy this brand new 2015 BMW, or never get a penny out of my RR while paying $ 135 full-cover insurance every month (I cannot de-register from military registration without clearing German customs--25% tax--and thus not stop insurance until the end of a year--June 2016 in my case). It's extortion. I have absolutely no trust in BMW what so ever. Now the dealer is getting a replacement for little money, collects the 5400 Euros from the extended warranty insurance, does the repair himself, and sells the bike as a race bike without warranty. With import tax, he paid $ 7,500, collects $ 6,000 from the insurance, collects from selling the bike, and got rid of a 2015 model in December of the same year. BMW always wins. No, I have nothing good to say about that company. Again, BMW Munich gave me in writing, that it is perfectly okay that my five-year old RR, original owner, all services done by BMW, accident free, tons of extras and in beautiful condition and under warranty—is a total loss after five years. Not my kind of company. Surely, the air-cooled boxer is a bullet-proof design. But BMW uses the cheapest components that they can get their hands on these days. When the regular warranty runs out after two years, this bike will be gone.
