Price for a GL1000 front end?
« on: November 03, 2006, 03:05:55 PM »
I got a quote for the front end off of a 1975 GL1000 at $400 CDN. It will include everything but the guages. Is this a good deal?

In what sort of shape? Fork seals good? Does it include the brake? If so how are the pads? When was the last time the caliper was serviced? And so it goes....!

If it's in good shape it doesn't sound too high. But I'd wait to hear from others too!

I paid $350 US for mine two years ago. It came of a running bike that had seized up and was being parted out and it was in great shape (only the tire needed to be replaced). I got everything from the tired to the top clamp (including the fork ears). It was a little much to spend but the condition and completeness was worth it.

The GLs are touring bikes and often see high miles.   Worn fork seals can be replaced but worn fork stanchion and or legs will be expensive.  Make sure you are not buying worn out stuff.  Every GL caliper I have seen (about eight) has had serious rust build up on the caliper pistons. Also the bolts that hold the caliper halves together can get pretty much "welded" in place by the heat and dissimilar metal reactions.  Bleeder screws can also lock up and break off .  Ask the seller to separate the caliper halves prior to sale and also take a look at the pistons.  I had a pair of stainless pistons made for the calipers on my 750s Gl front end.  The GLs front wheel has nice DID alluminum rim that is annodized.  You cant simply polish out scuffs and scratches so if looks matter to you keep this in mind. . . . . .If the parts you are buying are in good shape $400 doesn't seem too bad although I would suggest that you install new fork seals and rebuild the calipers unless you know for sure this has been done recently.  You should also get a dual disc sized master cylinder to operate the twin calipers.  Have fun.

I go with Eurban on this one. It wouldn't matter much about the seals because they are cheap but if the tubes are rusted out or bent.then you have probs.

Corroded pistons are a problem on any older bike. I would concur with it being a problem on the GL/CB750F's as well.

There is a place you can order them from in stainless in germany.

I just installed one of these phenolic pistons in my 400.  Seems to work pretty well so far and I'm guessing it will last a while.  It's supposed to eliminate some squeaking and you shouldn't have to worry about corrosion.  I paid about $25 for it...and it's also quite a bit lighter than the stock part.

GLs caliper pistons are different than the CBs.  Don't know if they make the phenolics for them.  Would be interested in knowing if they did. . . .

Yes the stock dual disc F2 and F3 750s seem to use very similar calipers to the ones on the GL.  These are very different from the rest of the SOHC line however.    Haven't seen the aftermarket phenolic pistons for f2/f3s either . . . . . .
