Small bikes are great to learn on, seriously.  50cc 2 stroke was the typical startup when I was a teenager.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

Speaking of age, Matt how old are you? The reason I ask is because advice can be different for a kid just getting a bike to learn on and start riding than for say a guy in his 40's who lives with his parents. C'mon, we all have that buddy from high school who still lives in his Mom's basement.
I like poetry, long walks on the beach, and poking at dead things with a stick.

I use to have a bicycle with a 2 stroke " bicycle engine kit" I bought I had it for probably almost a year before I traded it for 2 rc cars. It didn't have anything to shift . but I've drive a 4 Wheeler with the same shifting style as a motorcycle so I'm pretty confident I can ride a motorcycle.
