Should my center stand be touching the drive chain?
« on: December 09, 2015, 08:19:41 PM »
I have a 1975 CB550K1. I noticed that the center stand when up contacts the drive chain quite a bit and pushes it up. There seems to be a notch on the center stand that the chain fits into. I'm not sure if that is intentional to guide the chain or the result of 40 years of driving that has created that notch on the center stand.

On the other side the center stand touches off on the brake linkage shaft and also on the tab the center stand spring mounts to also touches the lower fixed shaft (not sure what to call it).

Is what I described normal? Is there a surface that the center stand is supposed to touch off on?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Not normal. Guessing you do not have the original exhaust.

The factory OEM exhaust on many of these bikes had a stopper on the underside of one of the pipes to hold the main stand in a lower position. Without the stock pipes the main stand will come up much further and contact the chain.
You will need to fabricate a stopper that holds the main stand lower down and this can be done off of the mounting bolts for the main stand, or I am sure other areas that will also work well.
The CB350F I did last year had a 4-1 pipe on the motor and suffered the same problem. I fabricated a small stopper that used the mounting bolt off the main stand left side mount and I covered it with a short piece of rubber hose that worked well.

I made this "temporary" part four years ago... ::)
I did paint it black eventually.
Still holding up!  ;D

That's not a notch for the chain to fit into. That's what it looks like when they chain grinds down the center stand, because it's not supposed to be touching it.

Like others said, the original exhaust had rubber stoppers for the stand. Bolt on a makeshift bracket on the rear peg mount. Some aftermarket exhausts come with them.

Do what a lot of other people have done and just take the center stand off. Takes less than 5 minutes, and if you need to work on the bike again just pop it back on real quick.

No it should not.

But when my stand stop moved it made for some interesting sound and took me a while to find what it was  ;D

Yep, removing oem exhaust also removed center stand stop. In my experience with 550s I would rather have the center stand than be without it.

strange isn't it? rode a 400f for long years and seen the groves cut into the stand, which was very hard to come by years ago. On the 400, the original exhaust bolts the single tail pipe to a bracket that has 2 holes. Any piece of scrap sheet steel will hold it from coming all the way up, it also tightens the spring tension so the stand isn't wabbling. I only noticed after putting a new stand of it this year, and seeing new scratches on it, from the chain, and seeing forum post' on it here at sohc. Improvise, make it look factory good.

That's exactly what I do. Take the stand off when I pull it out of the shed and pop it back in when I bring it home.

5 minutes? Takes about 20 seconds.
