 A friend has an Indian 4 that had a rod window in the block. He had a guy weld it and texture the case. You can't tell it was ever repaired. I liked it unrestored better but it's an awesome ride.
 That one's had it hard though. Too bad it's a skeleton, guys are parting out sandcasts though, there must be money in it. I watch ebay and pick off a part here and there.

I assume the title is in the name of the second owner who may have painted the tank black at that time.

DMV paperwork in Texas has a box asking for color, seems silly and I sometimes dont know what color to list on a project bike!

My sentiments exactly. I have purchased complete, undamaged Sandcast engines on eBay ranging from $2,500 - $3,500 depending on overall condition and EIN. Titled Rollers minus their engine and other assorted items $1,200 - $1,500.
Not all that is Sandcast is gold.   
My UNQUALIFIED opinion is $500 MAX for the cases and $1,000 MAX for the frame. Be nice to be wrong on this one.

Well i dont think anyone would have given you a high price having seen the cases..
 They probably gave you a range of price from high to low.
People will pay higher if they find the frame or engine they need to get a sandcast bike project underway.
 Cases can be repaired so that it is not visible, but its more work.....but obviously repaired cases with unfinished welds are not going to end up on a high end resto...jmo...

Apparently nobody providing those high numbers forked over the cash. You did not ask for an opinion when I inquired but rather told me what you were asking. You did say you were taking bids but your expectations were astronomical IMHO so I did not bid. I probably would have offered an opinion anyway if I knew the cases were in that condition.

That's how to find out what they are really worth. Time of year can have a big effect as well.

Frank is spot on. Can bring big bucks if you meet somebody's specific need.

I got $1300-1500(don't remember) for a left hand horn bracket frame.
Went to Germany.

This was a few years ago.

I don't remember anyone saying $4k for a frame/engine in any condition.
But personally I always put stuff on eBay with a "shoot the moon price"
Some get sore and say it will never sell.  Often they are right, but not always.
I tend to think it keeps the dreamer buyers away.

True that time of year makes a difference.  Some will say that people don't buy big ticket items around Christmas, but I think they real guy that has the funds to actually do something with something like this has the funds year round.

I agree with Jag on time of year part sales. I don't think it runs the same cycle as completed running bike values between winter and riding season. I would think parts sell better in non riding season when bikes are down for the off season. People keep asking me what the lowest I would take for them, but they won't come out with an offer. I have them listed high right now but will change the format of the listing to a lower starting bid and see where it goes. I never quite understood the difference between a reserve price and a starting bid at your reserve. If you have a $1500 item and  you aren't going to take less than $1200 and it's listed at $.99 with a reserve you  are going to get a lot of cowbells that aren't close to the end price. The ones who are really interested don't join in the bid frenzy, I never openly bid on anything on eBay. I snipe bid everything, either I win it in the last 5 seconds or I don't exceed my budget for that item.

Keep in mind when I first checked pricing I did not know the condition of the cases and realize this will detract from top dollar.

I have someone in Germany interested in both the frame and the cases and wants me to make him an offer. I told him to make me an offer and I will consider it. No one should be worried about insulting me with a low ball offer. I know I am going to get them. Besides you don't know the other party so I could care less if his feelings are hurt when I offer what it is worth to me.

Guy from England is sending his CB750 engine restorer from south of Atl. to pick them up. I assume they will end up in the UK. The guy in Germany snoozed and lost. Everyone just wanted to play the game of asking what was the cheapest I would go on the items. I don't play that game. I listed them for what I wanted and it's the potential buyers responsibility to make a counter offer. No one bid or made any offers. I got what I wanted for the frame but not what I wanted for the cases, but I can recoup more with the rest of the parts on the bike.

This guy is delusional. He had these listed on eBay for $3500, but lowered it to $3K. I messaged him and asked what he would take for them.
Here was his reply:

"I have two cb 750 sandcast engines here at my location. I only have the case halves on ebay at the moment cb750e-1006126, I also have a complete sandcast engine cb750e-1002896 Its pretty rough I attached pictures of the damage. I am open to offers on both, saying that I do know what I have and will not accept any lowball offers. I can get rid of these for $10,000 but the guy is in Japan, personally I would like to keep these machines in the United States."


$10K, Really? And he still owns them because he doesn't want to send them out of the country. Really. $10k, Really?

"Its tempting to send them back overseas but I never liked the idea of these old jap bikes going back to the mainland.

I had to leave my email and pictures of the sandcast engines with a guy in Ohio then about 2 weeks later I got a email from the guy in japan.

Well you know with rare items you ask a high $ then come down depending item/situation/customer. Never know someone may bite that bait you got out there.

Now they are relisted at $3K because he got zero bids at $3500 at the same time mine were listed for $1800 and I got zero bids at that price. How would he know if the buyer was from Japan until checkout, what would he do, tell them- I'm not sending them to Japan?

As IF not sending them to Japan is worth 7k+ what a joke.  When I read this type of seller spin it just angers me.  What really infuriates me is that these types of people will have a small effect on the next guy who stumbles upon a similar item.  He will look up something on ebay and see what some dreamer LISTED the item for (NOT SOLD) and then value his item according to the asking price.  Dumb.

Not saying anything against the points raised here, that guy is full of sh1t, but its easy to contact an ebay seller by PM and make a deal without ebay being involved, or before the item is sold, I've done it a few times, rcently did it with a GS1100 swingarm, seller was selling with shocks, I only wanted the arm and did a deal outside the auction.. ...

I message him to see what he actually wanted for them, he danced around the bush and never said. I wanted to get my cases listed while his were there at a much lower prices, thought it might help push mine, it didn't.

The seller did have a BIN price listed, so asking what he really wanted would not have yielded much info.......
