Few questions about spokes, brakes, and cables.
« on: December 10, 2015, 11:55:30 AM »
Spokes. http://www.buchananspokes.com/products/spoke_kits_honda_cb.asp

I'm having trouble finding spokes specifically for a cb550 with an 18" front wheel.
I measured the spoke hole diameter, and it's roughly around .281" (can't get an accurate measurement, but it's definitely not .250"). Buchanan sells spokes with those measurements for an 18", and it seems like they'll fit? KHON505SS.
They don't have spokes listed specifically for a standard 550 rear. Is the 750 rear with drum they list compatible? KHON601SS is the part number.

Brakes.
I want to do dual disc. What exactly do I need? Just another caliper, hanger, and? I already have the SS lines for it.

Cables.
Is there anyone that sells "pre-made" cables for clip-ons? Last time I checked, there wasn't. If that's still the case, who should I contact for custom length cables? And does anyone have a recommendation on what length they should be?

Yes, but is the drum brake hub for the 400 identical to the drum brake hub for the 550?  Just call Buchanan's and tell them what you want and the exact diameter of the hub where the spoke holes are.  IF necessary, they will make you custom spokes.

Patrick over at Buchanan Spokes helped me. Was on the phone less than 5 minutes and got everything ordered. The KHON505 spokes are the ones I need for the 18" front, and they have to make spokes for the rear.

Looked up Godffrey's dual disc kit.

Will talk to Motion Pro about custom length cables. Anyone else done that and know what length they used?

Brakes.
I want to do dual disc. What exactly do I need? Just another caliper, hanger, and? I already have the SS lines for it.

Caliper, rotor, pivot arm, modified speedo drive, longer rotor bolts (or get the rotor carrier holes recessed to use the existing bolts). You can modify the speedo drive yourself of buy one from http://www.vinmoto.org/gallery/v/VinMoto-Garage/album03/Godfferys-Garage-123/Parts+and+service/Complete+Twin+Disc+kit/DSCN0280.JPG.html Godffery is a member here.

You'll also probably need to machine down the bosses on the fork lower to align the pads to the new disc or add spacers. The opposite fork lower has all the threaded bosses for a new caliper pivot arm but they weren't machined properly. You won't be able to use anyone else's measurement to align the caliper because of this. If you want, read through my build thread where I do my dual disc conversion. TOC in the beginning of the thread. My method of aligning the new caliper worked very well and it's pretty easy.

Cables.
Is there anyone that sells "pre-made" cables for clip-ons? Last time I checked, there wasn't. If that's still the case, who should I contact for custom length cables? And does anyone have a recommendation on what length they should be?

Motion pro sells shorter cables and they also do custom length ones. Call them up, they're really helpful. On my 550 I actually have stock length throttle cables and I don't have any issues. I have a shorter Motion Pro clutch cable, though.
