IINM, 100 links was Honda's way of saving costs. It will run fine, in fact little more fun if you intend to ride aggressively on zig-zags. An 18 front sprocket with a 102 link chain works better for touring.

I'm back! I was working seven days a week through all of October-November with zero time to get anything on the bike done. By the time my hours went back to normal winter was here and my garage was an ice box. Finally spring is here, the snow is melted and I can get back to work.

I spent this afternoon getting my carbs ready to go back in the bike. I had bench synced them last spring and set the float heights but hadn't done the clear tube test to get everything at the same level. It took a few float adjustments and I stink like gas but everything should be pretty good until I can do a true carb sync.

I got brand new boots for both sides of the carbs and got everything back together. The old ones were hard as a rock and the airbox side were all warped. New one pictured left, old one right.

Carbs back on!

Put in a new K&N air filter and after lots of cursing and busted knuckles I got the airbox back in, too!

Gauges are back together. I figured I should get these on the bike before before I mount the headlight and start the wiring. That way I'm not scratching up the headlight bucket trying to get these in.

Am I missing something here? I've got a green and red wire by the starter solenoid that I'm not sure where they go.

green= ground, red= bat.+(always hot), neither used on U.S.A. models.

Electronics are all wrapped up. Everything is wired and functioning. Swapped out the points for an electronic ignition and hooked up and adjusted all of my cables.

Next step, exhaust.

Almost. The paint is going to take the longest to finish it up. I'll have to start prepping everything this week. I've got a dent free tank from eBay that I need to strip and remove an old kreem liner and some side covers from frankenstuff to do up. I picked up Flake Sunrise Orange paint from VMR so I can do them up in the original color

The originals are in pretty good condition, some small dents and scratches so I'll probably just keep them off to the side for now. I threw them on yesterday just for the hell of it, the picture makes them look a lot better than they are. But here's an idea of what the finished product will look like (pay no attention to the gigantic mess.)

Thanks guys! I've had this reproduction exhaust, from David Silver Spares, tucked away for almost a year. I finally got it onto the bike yesterday and had the chance to fire it up today.

I attached a gas line, turned the key and hit the starter. It turned right on!

Started getting the spare tank I have ready for paint. First step, remove the kreem liner. I've read a lot of things about these liners, good and bad. The more recent I get though they're mostly bad. And since this liner was already separating from inside the tank it had to go. I plugged the petcock, dumped in a gallon of MEK and sealed the top now all I can do is wait and shake periodically.



I managed to pry out a 1/4 inch thick chunk that was hanging loose inside and set it in a coffee can with some MEK for test purposes. You could see the MEK instantly going to work as it started to become cloudy. I just went out to check on it an hour and a half later and it's turned to mush.

Unfortunately the original tank also has one of these liners in it too. I'm not sure if I want to run it in the interim, I've read that ethanol gas and this doesn't get along and I really don't want to rebuild my carbs again.

Damn, I guess I shouldn't chance it. Well it looks like the MEK is doing a number on the Kreem so I shouldn't have to wait too much longer.

Aren't those pipes sweet?
Sorry I forgot to mention: you can put the top half of the airbox in easily, tighten it up to the frame and carbs, and then slide in the K&N in the lower half to bolt it up. MUCH easier!

Haha, thanks Mark, I actually put the airbox on that way, my giant hands just were getting in the way. I don't think I can ever get tired of looking at those pipes, definitely worth the investment.

The Kreem is gone!
Before shot.

I used a plumbers plug to close up the tank. You can see in the coffee can some of the liquefied crap that came out. The plug actually ended up partially melting from the MEK.

The tank flash rusted pretty quick after draining and rinsing out.

Klean Strip Prep and Etch (phosphoric acid) cleaned it out almost instantly.

Tank is drying out now. I'll splash some 2-stroke fuel in there after to keep it from flash rusting again while I prep for paint.
