11 inch shocks
« on: November 05, 2006, 07:18:04 PM »
I hear alot about putting 11 inch shocks on a 750 to lower the rear. Are the shocks made special that way or do they come stock on 500's or other models?

I got mine for my CB750 from http://HTTP://WWW.CRC2ONLINECATALOG.COM
They are right around $80 bucks for the pair.
I actually just ordered another set for the CB450 project.

They are aftermarket (as in NOT a Honda part), but looks just like the stock ones, and ride quite
well for being 2 inches shorter than stock. If you wanna get really crazy, you can do the short shocks PLUS a lowering block,
but you will almost 4sure run into rubbing issues if you do that...

Buy them !!  ;D

It looks like you have extended forks so you shouldn't have problems. With stock forks, you have to shorten up your sidestand or it will stand straight up. Also,if you are runnin certain pipes...you will have a ground clearance issue. Its not bad if you stay on the roads and don't go stump jumpin!!!!

The bike in the pic on the left was from my younger days, long gone but not forgotten. It had a 6 over fork with lowering blocks. What im working on now is a 78 F SS. I dont think lowering blocks will work with it since it has a rear disc brake. The shock would hit the caliper.

I thought that looked like something from the 70's!!! I have a 75K with the shorties.I had to chop part of the little nub on the bottom of the sidestand so it would lean over a bit. I'm runnin an old Kerker 4to1 race pipe so I only have 3" clearance at the collector. I haven't had a problem yet but I am careful hittin driveways or goin over stpid speed bumps. Pro Teal even has a 16" rear wheel so he's even lower but I don't know about his exhaust clearance.

A piece of advice - the 11" shocks that are sold by Cycle-Re-Cycle and others are not the best quality and are at their limits on a 750 - they may work better on lighter bikes.  It may be worth looking for a better quality brand in a similar length??

This is a true statement.
I never said the 11'' shocks are high quality by any means , but they suit my need just fine (especially 4 the price)..

Pro Teal even has a 16" rear wheel so he's even lower but I don't know about his exhaust clearance.
My bike is real low with the 11'' shocks + the 16'' rear wheel, true statement.
I have not once scraped my exhaust on a turn yet (and i have tried)..
The only part of my exhaust that scrapes is the lowest point of the collector, towards the front
of the bike. It will eventually smash itself clear  ::) ;D

I have em on my 550, and love them, but they are STIFF, with little travel. They are a good answer to going rigid, which was my previous setup.
they do  look GOOD...

ProTeal and chippyfive50 - I agree that they look great, do the job, and the price is great.  Just don't do what I did once and try them on an old Goldwing to lower the rear.  Looked great but as the season went on my back sat lower and lower until the fender was sitting on the rear wheel!
