« on: December 15, 2015, 03:18:22 PM »
This is my first bike project in some ways I am a little over my head here but I am going to give it a go.
I need a few things yet To get it running, I can turn the motor over with a wrench ,taken one tappet cover off everything looks good ,The original tank isn't on the bike in the pic I have taken it to work and started to weld up the hole there is a lot here is a few picture of what that all looks like,

Pete,

Welcome to sohc4.net!  Be sure to download the owner and service manual (http://www.sohc4.net/cb650-manuals/).  Please note that there are slight changes between 1979-80 models and 1981-82 models.  Specifically, the head is slightly different and the models use different carburetors (slide models for the earlier years and CV models for the later years).

The 650 is overlooked and underappreciated, but the engine is a substantial improvement over the 550 in torque and horsepower.  The head is more efficient than the 550, as well.  It can also be tuned -- with big bore kits and cams available.  And it weighs only a few pounds more than the 550.  In fact, the 650 engine bolts directly into 500 and 550 frames.  You can check out DaveBaubier and my build threads where we are transplanting tuned 650 engines into 550 frames.

I thought I had all the holes filled but when I sandblasted the rest of the tank I found a few more plan and filling them tomorrow at work and get ready to air test it. the start grinding down the welds and retesting . I want all the welding done on it before I put any fuel in it . Here's some pic of the tank to date

Even after pressure testing, it would not hurt to line the tank with some Caswell epoxy.  It will not degrade with Ethanol-based fuel and give you peace of mind against leaks.

I been thinking about it not sure what to use so I'll look into this ,last thing I want is to have a leak after I put fuel in it.
Thanks Pete

Today I just welded leaks , turned up the argon soaped it up and marked leaks ,fixed leaks , getting close to sealing it up . If any one know how much air pressure I should use please let me know I think 2 to 3 psi should do it more afraid  of putting to much pressure in it,

Today all leaks sealed, got the tank back home and started to grind the welds with my Dremel . Its going to be slow I want to be careful not to grind into the original metal .

I would like to make it as original as possible. Once I get it running I will disassemble to the frame and paint . The chrome is in good condition with very little rust . So I think I can bring it back in better than good condition .

Today ,didn't do much did a little grinding , go a bright idea, put some 3/4 inch tubing from my sprinklers on the end of my shop and vac out all the debris from the tank. I even got out a few egg corns, and the rest of the fuel  filter. Then I got the idea of putting aquarium stones in the tank to get rid of more rust . caswell epoxy says to put sheet rock screws in the tank so I am thinking the stones would be easier to get out try it and got all out easy with my vac. I put them back in so every time I move the tank while grinding my welds it get agitated by the time I get my epoxy It will be good to go.

I used to put in smallish tumbling stones and wrap the tank in a blanket and put it snug in a small cement mixer.

I didn't do ant thing to the bike today, I did get to the DMV and transferred the title .I also got 4gallons of fresh gas and seafoam . Tomorrow I am going to give it a shot to turn the motor over . and go from there I am thinking I'll have to clean the carbs. Been reading the clymer getting familiar with the carbs . This is going to be a big step for me. I have removed the carb s off the Vstar but never broke any down to clean.

I just took mine to a radiator shop to have it blasted and pressure tested for a few bucks.  Then I Caswell lined it.

I feel I got a good pressure test at work after I finished welding it. I will give it another test after I finished grinding down the welds just to make sure I didn't open up a thin spot. Then use the caswell on it. By this time the inside should look pretty good

I managed to Confuse my self pretty good and may need some help. First I put power to the bike form my Yamaha turn the key and the started  crank but I am not sure if it turn the motor
Then I put a little gas in it filled the bowels when I cranked it gas came out from what  I think is the over flow. Ok now looking at the carbs there are just one hoses on the auto fuel valve here's a few pics of the carbs
I am not sure where these hoses should be ?
