eNd aka Frankenstein build
« on: December 16, 2015, 10:37:17 PM »
Hello all, just starting a build on a 1978 ss What I wanted to build, the way I wanted to build it. The bikes were given to me by my uncle that has passed. The 1973 bike had 7k original miles, was sitting for 38 years. It still turns over with the kicker, sadly bike sat too long out side, I'm using it for parts. Keeping motor. The 1976 Honda GL100 engine let loose and she gave me an entire front end, and some other odds and ends. The main bike, the 78 ss has 10k original miles but was also sitting for 20 years so lots of cleanup was needed. Not done and may not ever but here is where I'm at now  >:( >:( >:( :o

Uprising,

Can you give us the rough break-down of which parts you are using from each bike (78F, 73K, GL)?  It appears you are using the 78F frame, engine, oil tank with the 73K gas tank so far.  What is the overall objective/design-aesthetic you are trying to achieve?

It would make sense to use the front end from the GL for the larger diameter forks and brakes, as well as the 78F rear wheel/brake.

Frank: it sure does look that way. That gold tank did look good (patina, flaws and all) but it's uprising's now to skull-ify!

The gold tank was smashed in on 3 places at the crease and a few on the side, body man tried to save it, He got out the ones off the crease with hairdryer and a computer aerosol cleaner, he had rods inside the tank trying to get out the dents but were too bad. paint was chipped up pretty bad. The overlay is covering the dents where its hard to see. Using the Gl1000 forks, tree, wheel, brakes on the front. 78 engine and frame. I still have the tank for the 78 that's has a few dings but not bad. I like the look of the 73k tank better, wish I could of saved the original tank paint. Its looks better in pic as I just cleaned it with wd 40 to get some grease off it to check for all the dents.

Look at the first pic of the tank. While on the 73 at the bottom. That was after the attempted repair.

Nah tank was in bad shape. I loved the color but I'm just not that nostalgic on running it with patina (faded bad paint abvious drop over on side. I get how some people might want to keep it that way but I wasn't one of them. Hell when I got the 78 he had giant long forks on it and no tail, looked like a chopper I'm telling you I need to snap a pic of the forks he was using. They were throwing both away. I'm a little different than most people and I wanted something different and obviously it will be.. Bike was too far gone to dump serious cash into it. That includes both of them. The 73 had no title as well.

Just showing off the Hydrographic film a friend of mine sells, bike will have the 16" Harley rim Buchannan spokes, 150/80/16 rear tire, more of a Brat/Tracker/Post apocalypse Mad max. I'm not really copying anyone just making a bike into what I want simple as that.

Uprising,

Thanks for the response.  I think we assumed that the gold tank was in better shape from the limited view in the above photo.  Good for you in trying to save it, but being able to repurpose it.

I have done the GL front swap.  You will likely want to get new springs for the forks.  They are sprung for a much heavier bike.  Great replacements are available through Racetech -- even gold valve emulators, too.

Good luck.  We'll be following.
