My son just sent me this pic of this 1971 CB500 he saw near his job site today. It's parked out behind someones house and it looks like it's been out in the elements for a number of years. He didn't have time to look it over real good but says a couple of the original pipes are rusted out and it's missing the right side cover. From the one pic it looks like a complete and original CB500 8) Going to try to go check it out this weekend and find the owner and see what over all shape it really is in. Wish me luck :)

Quite true, as I find from my free pump house find 71 K1. Engine in boxes but frame nice and clean as well as rust free tank and chrome. It sure is fun observing (and paying for) the resurrection. A lot of satisfaction in knowing that new parts are going in and I will know exactly where I screwed up and whose pocket the turd will be put. Best of luck and congratulations on the find.

I agree. Bikes that are cheap or sometimes even free can lighten up the wallet big time. Not sure why someone would abandon a original bike like this and let the weather destroy it :( Hope I can talk to the owner and find out some history on the bike . My guess is that a family member lost interest for what ever reason or passed away years ago and its been sitting in that spot ever since. And I bet the title is no where to be found either.

It is weird how some of these bikes get abandoned by the PO. I found a 74 CB750 in the Milwaukee area a few years ago with 15,000 miles on it. Bike was outside, but the motor was out and froze up. All the other parts were still on the bike. I got it for $100 so price was very good. The story was the guy bought the bike and rode it a few years then bought a Harley. He liked the HD so never rode the 750 again and let it sit. Why he did not sell it who knows?

It is weird how some of these bikes get abandoned by the PO.

There are many reasons, the obvious is most people are passionate it about bikes like we are.
Another reason is they do not see the bike as a valuable asset, and just let em sit outside in the weather.
15 years ago, that bike could have easily been purchased for 50 bucks or so, worth next to nothing to the owner and he may not know the value.

My biggest fear in life is when I die, my wife sells my bikes for what she thinks they are worth! [$200-300]

My son and I finally got together and went back to look at the CB500 he found several weeks ago. On the rough side no doubt about it but I've seen a lot worse here on the forum. Don't need or have room for another bike, but didn't have the heart to leave the ole girl sitting outside any longer to battle mother nature a battle she couldn't win. So I brought her home ;D No title or key, but the owner is going to look through her deceased husband stuff to she if she can locate it. Doesn't sound to promising ,but who knows. The husband and owner died 12 years or so ago and the bike was running then. It's sat out where my son found it since than. But it was under a shed cover for a while until a storm destroyed it. Motor is stuck but think it just from sitting. Just like my 750K4 was and some ATF down the plug holes freed it up so hope that works on this CB500. Engine had plugs still in it. I took 3 of the valve caps off and lifters still had oil on them. Crankcase still has oil in it and was still near the full mark. Bike is missing right side cover and left outer pipe rusted out. But the other HM323 pipes are in decent shape, just need a major cleaning. Here some pics picking it up and when I got back to the house.

I suspect the former owner would be glad that his bike was found by someone who will appreciate it.
Good luck with the title.

Yeah Barney never had a bike in quite this condition before. But like I said seen much worse. This one needs a extra dose of TLC for sure. This is going to be a father and his two sons project ;D If it had been modified or butchered I would of left it right where it had been sitting for the last umpteen years. But being a original unmolested CB500 I couldn't walk away from it. I guess this is why I have 5 of them in my garage now :o But isn't this what being a member of the sohc4 fourm is all about and what we are all here for. And when we're lucky enough to find these old bike's and they aren't already a totally lost cause when we stumble across them we need to save them from the crusher and bring them back to life like they were 40 years ago in their glory days back in the 70's.

Yes it is, good on you!  Dont worry about the no-title for now, plan on registering it in Vermont when the time comes.

Congrats hall and "good on you" for showing this 500 the respect she deserves. Price is really good too. I agree don't worry about the title. In WI the PO can fill out a DMV form for a lost title and they will issue one to his wife. She can then sign over to you. Hope they have the same for you in your state.

Yeah Johnie the cheapest sohc4 bike I ever got. But when all is said and done it will more than likely be my most expensive ::)  she needs a lot of work.
I need a key for it have you ever got anything from Hondakeys.com.  The owner said she would look for the key and title but I got my doubts anything will be found.

I need a key for it have you ever got anything from Hondakeys.com.

There should be a number on the ignition switch, or possibly the seat lock.

If you can get that, buy one from Rigent for $7...
