Used my impact driver(you have to have one to work on these old bikes)to get the side cover off. Going to remove starter while Im hear to be sure its not froze up from sitting so long outside and keeping engine from turning also. Still letting the engine soak a little longer after putting some lube down the plug holes. Nasty behind that cover ???

Dwight,

As far as the tank treatment goes, if it were mine, I'd start with the Vinegar treatment for a week, then inspect and if necessary follow up with the Klean and Strip "Prep & Etch" for an hour or 3.  That should have the tank looking good.
Definitely pull the petcock and gas cap and use rubber stoppers to plug the holes.

Quite a nice find and I know she'll turn out nice!

Thanks Charlie. It was a pretty productive weekend on the old girl ;D Tank is coming along good as you see and after sitting for 5 days with MMO and ATF the motor came FREE kicks over smooth as silk 8) so I hope the motor will be good to go.

Good news!
Real good news  Stev-o
I was starting to think maybe she wasn't going to free up. After all had been sitting outside for years uncovered. And even though plugs were still in bike after all that time moisture and dampness had to come into play. The rocking back in forth in high gear was not working like it did with my 750K4. So I decided to take the left side cover off so I could get  direct access to the crank bolt and that did the trick. Im surprised you didnt  here my scream of joy all the way in Texas when it broke loose.

Maybe that's what I heard down here in Georgia!  Congrats on getting it free and that tank is cleaning up nicely!  Well done, dhall!

How much of The Works did you buy to put in there?  I have an old 750 tank that I'm just fooling around with but it will eventually clean up.  I'm thinking of buying some of that to put in there but I'd love to know how much you used.

DH, look closely at the rust spots. Looks like maybe some metal was eaten away. Tank looks great but to play it safe I would line it. For 40 bucks it's worth saving headaches later on.....

I have used 'The Works' in the past....but, I have always used a baking soda mixture directly after in order to neutralize the acid.

Just a thought....

My unheated garage was a cold today. But I tinkered with the bike a little took seat off and removed the battery and air filter.
Seat looks to be pretty much a lost cause. Hope to take carbs off bike next week. Throttle is stuck so Im sure they are in rough shape to.

I think Dave in Ohio has a 500 seat for sale, will look for the thread.

I like using a petroleum-based cleaner on dirty, rusty areas of the bike [rather than water].

if you decide to recover, this seller has good ones, less the chrome strip. I have a correct one for my 550. Decent price/quality.

 This +1

And dry it completely. I swish around some denatured alcohol to suck up the water from the tank seams, etc. Compressed air and/or a heat gun to dry it some more. Once dry, swish around some Marvel Mystery Oil to protect it until you add gas.

Man, I absolutely love seeing dirty pictures of bikes. Especially upclose shots of individual compartments and sections. It's almost a perversion of mine. Can't wait for the after picks. That battery compartment doesn't look too bad, except for maybe some rotten rubber terminal boots.
