1967 CB77 305 Superhawk
« on: December 24, 2015, 06:56:22 AM »
A CB77 Super Hawk followed me home today. This model has been on my bucket list for some time.

The engine is seized, the right side engine cover is broken (likely from someone trying to start the stuck motor), and the kicker gears are missing.

The right side muffler has crash rash. The left header is rusted through and cracked in one spot.

Otherwise is it complete, and seems like a solid bike. The chrome is shot on the handlebars in a few spots. No problem there, as I want flat, or at least lower bars on it.

The plan is a full restoration, starting with a motor rebuild. I'll then sort it out mechanically, then disassemble it to strip and paint.

I had a 305 scrambler when I was a kid in the early 70's. Don't remember year...65,6,7 ? It was stripped for dirt only...I had no license!! Weird to see chain on the right.

Great bikes, been on my list for a while, almost traded a junker of a 350F for one a few weeks back but took the CS5...

Still have my dad's 66 305 Superhawk.  I learned to ride on a 64 Superhawk.  Great bikes.

Great find, is on my list also. A few showed in Phoenix but at 3K not for me. One was very complete however.

Believe it or not I have the rear brake cable for the CB77. Ordered for the CB160 but cables are different.

Jas, I have a few parts from the Dream build. Some might interchange so when you get to it drop me a PM.

I shopped for some CB77 parts when looking for a CB77 at Tim's Restoration (expensive) and David Silver in the US has a fair price on AM mufflers. Might want to snag a pair while you can. Half the cost of Tim's.

On the low bars Tim's has the bars and cables excluding the front brake. Seems very hard to find one. Might have to make one.

I am planning on gertting a pair of the aftermarket ones that David Silver sells.    I've got to let the bank account recover from Christmas first.

Welcome.

Noticed a Guzzi in your sig. V7 prices are low out this way, not so much on the Racer version. Newest Racer is to die for.

I have the wants on the Griso myself.

I got the '14 V7 Special for $5,200 with only 976 miles on it.     It was only just bought as a new left over in August at a steep $3k discount off list.

DO IT!    Rumor is the Griso will be discontinued next year, so, if you want a new one, get one while you can.

The Griso is definitely an awesome bike!

So, the plot thickens.     I have a deposit on a running 1965 Super Hawk.    It should be delivered to me in a few weeks.

I'm not sure what I'll do with the '67 one yet.    I may get it running and then sell it, or may just sell it as it sits.

Found a few including this one. Salvage title is the spoiler. If I was to keep it then no biggie but resale is another matter.

I contacted the seller and it needs a front wheel, fender, headlight assembly and the instrument cluster. The later being a complicated issue if the ecu is involved.

Add to the above is finding used parts. Not a lot around and new is worse than a Ducati.  :o

And this guy is on something. Not sure what either. Told me he has a trailer with propane hook up. Run Forest, run!

That is a CA77, aka Dream 300.   Different bike.
Some people like 'em.   Me?   Not so much.   The square headlight and funky flared fenders don't do anything for me, nor does the funky leading link fork.

I was given a seized and worn out 305 Superhawk many, many years ago as an early teenager.  She ended up never going back together and my parents gave what was left away while I was deployed in the Navy. Getting another one and resurrecting her has been on my atonement list for many years since.  One day.

Fix it up and ride it like you stole it!

I'm out of control!

I dragged home another '67 Superhawk from Brooklyn last evening.   This one is one of the last few hundred that got the chrome fenders.    Sadly, the front fender is bent up, and the chrome on the rear one is bubbled up.   I got this one for a few hundred less than the other one.   The kick starter gears are messed up, but I don't think the motor is seized.  I'll check it out more thoroughly tonight.

It's funny, there have been no Superhawks for sale within a reasonable drive for some time, other than ones that were too far gone to save, or ones that were priced way to high.    Then, 3 in as many weeks.

Sadly, for not a lot more than the total of what I have into all three, I could have bought one nice one.    But, that said, they're not making any more, and I could certainly get my money back out of them should a nice one come up for sale near me.

For now, they will wait quietly in the corner while I finish up with a few bikes that I plan to flip in the spring.   I need to replenish the bike fund.

This past weekend, I found yet ANOTHER Superhawk. I made the 6 hour round trip to Brooklyn, NY from Palmyra, PA to get it.

It is a late '67 with the chrome fenders.

It was advertised for $1,800, and looked pretty good online, but, when I got there, it was a lot needier. I ended up taking it home for $1,000.

The chrome on the rear fender and mufflers is shot. The front fender is bent, and the kicker gears are messed up. It allegedly was running this past summer, but, may have been sitting outside, so, I'm hoping that the engine isn't seized. I won't be able to determine that until I get a chance to remove the jammed up kicker gears. It has 10k miles on it, so, if it isn't seized there is a good chance it'll be a decent running w/o a top end rebuild.

OK, I can't keep track of which forum (honda305, hondatwins, and this one) that I've posted which posts too.

This morning's post was a repeat of an earlier one.    I only got ONE Superhawk from Brooklyn.   The total is still three, and the bike fund is empty; well, actually negative, because I have a balance on my Visa that I can't pay this money due to these purchases.

So, once the New Hampshire bike gets here, I'll have three Superhawks, but, won't be able to buy any of the needed parts for a couple of months.

D'oh!
