reportedly Kosman drag bike wheel, can anyone identify?
« on: December 24, 2015, 06:23:26 pm »
I'm not very knowledgeable regarding old non spoked drag wheels.  This is an 18" wheel, roughly 5.5" wide at the bead.  Does it look familiar to anyone?  It's reportedly a Kosman.

Thanks,

George

Sifton  Star  brake and caliper on what looks like a Mitchell wheel.
The bolt pattern is dirtrack pattern used with quickchange hubs, and also by Kosman.

Mitchell wheels at one time were sold thru Performance Machine, one of the lightened versions is the Chicane , which dragracer and now Bill Benton are running..

Here is another Star brake..trying to find my old Sifton Catalogs , not sure if i kept one.
Originally produce by ADE, in the bay area..

Wow, I am impressed Frank.  Any chance you would know when these wheels came out?  I'm hoping to stay with 70s vintage stuff if possible.

PM was selling them  by 82 as I recall. But they must have been made awhile before that.
I think it should be within 2 lbs of Dragracers wheel, should be same wheel with cutouts.. Maybe different diameter.

What definitely was out thekre in the 70,s was the Cragar type wheel in 15 inch, I think they were in the D And K catolog, and a bike in the RC catalog had one on it.

I do not remember Kosman selling Mitchell wheels or Star calipers, he always felt a wire wheel was the lightest way to go for an 18 inch wheel back in the 70's.  The bolt patterns on that Mitchell look the same the hubs on the 15 Cragar rears for a mid 70's D&K, but Mitchell did sell then to fit stock Honda discs like on Nitro Hunters F model.  I am not sure when the Mitchells came out, but I bought the Star caliper, master cylinder, rear hub package for my Z1 back in 75 or 76.

I just picked up the hub/sprocket/disc with the rusty disc that I posted the pic of. Appears almost the same as most flattrack hubs, except thicker flanges..  I suspect it may be a Sifton wheel..  I think my mid eighties Sifton catalog showed a wire wheel complete with that disc and caliper, but I have not found the catalogue yet. PM, D&K, Kosman, and others including Barnes....had very similar hubs.

Kosman was also selling a 3 spoke design wheel when I bought the Mitchell wheels through Performance Machine.
