electrice question
« on: December 27, 2015, 11:19:37 AM »
I am right in thinking that if the starter isn't turning the motor I will not get a spark?
Thanks
Pete

That all depends on the condition of your battery. Low voltage can still allow a kick start when the starter won't turn. Now if you have a starter, solenoid or switch problem and your battery is good you should be able to kick it.

The ignition will gives a spark although the starter is unused. You can kickstart the engine and drag it to start. In these situations the starter isn't turning and the engine will start if your ignition system and battery is in good order.

Thanks, My starter spins but it doesn't turn the motor.I also have no spark. still chasing down why. Got to thinking that maybe not spark was do to the motor not turning now I can rule that out and continue looking .

yes you need to treat those two separately.

the only thing the starter motor does is, provide some engine rotation to trigger a spark from the ignition system. this rotation can also be provided in other ways (kickstart, push the bike). a non-working starter motor does not indicate a faulty ignition.

did you take a voltage reading off your battery? did you try to kickstart?

This is on a 82 650 nighthawk I got a new battery . No kick start. The bike sat for at lease 5 years  The starter spins but the motor doesn't turn. I am thinking maybe the starter clutch. My thinking is get the motor turning by the starter then worry about electrical . The motor turns easy by hand so I know that is not a issue . that's why I thinking starter clutch. can anything else keep the starter from turning the motor??
