Nope, not an expansion chamber, but it is somewhat related to tuning... ;D

Nope, not a catastrophic converter (good guess) or thermonuclear device, although I've seen different forms of the same type of device in the nuclear power industry. ;)

Reminds me of a type of check valve I used to see on steam or natural gas lines in industrial applications.
