Thinking of selling out....anyone made a big life change by choice?
« Reply #50 on: January 07, 2016, 03:23:59 PM »
So assuming you sleep 8 hours every night, you're saying you spend only 10 hours M-F not working or sleeping?  Given the high cost of living in that area, I don't understand why people give up so much time of every day commuting.  It's like a double whammy.  High cost to live, and you have to spend more of your free time away from your home just to afford it.  So if you look at it in a sense of $$ per hour spent at home, it's even more expensive than say, a home in North Dakota.  You could take a pay cut and move somewhere else and afford the same standard of living.

I normally get about 6.5 hours realistically. Get up at 4:45am, get home around 9:30pm to be in bed by 10:30. It hasn't burned me out yet but I like my job and the people I work with and I'm freelance technically so I can refuse work (never happens) and also work from home every once in a while (like tomorrow :) ). The money is good and I'm single so it works for me, haha. But hearing what everyone is saying, especially reading what Scott is going through just makes me think a lot more.

I think it's rare for a kid my age to be getting insight from this many...ahem...mature people ;).  I'm just soaking it all in and keeping it in the back of my mind.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Scott if I were in your position right now, here is where I would be hanging out and dreaming:

http://advrider.com/index.php

If I had no significant other, a house and things I would be willing to get rid of, I would sell everything, buy a decent newer adventure bike and all the gear, make sure my passport was up to date, put two years rent on a storage unit for the things I can't get rid of and start riding! I love travelling and seeing the world from two wheels would be the dream of a lifetime. Just a thought! :)

When you get tired of riding you can always start over with a fresh outlook on life.

Well I can say this from my Foster Parent experiences. Just go for what feels right, I would agree with the smaller home larger garage idea. Also though if you really love your girlfriend just give it all you have. Yeah it is painful if it doesn't work out but you know you gave it all you had. And remember what others do is not a reflection of you but a reflection of them. The work thing is tougher I am having similar issues there and really have not found a better option.

 Yep....already there.

 Didn't say I wasn't ready. I just can't. Job, bills, obligations.

I am actively shopping an all around, ADV style bike. Leaning heavily towards a Tiger 800 550F, possibly, a Tiger 1050.

Can't go wrong with a 1050 Tiger Scott. I've had one for 5 years and absolutely love it. With a little suspension work they handle like a sportbike with long travel sliders to tame some not so good roads. Even pulled a couple of 800 mile days when bitten by desire.

A friend has one locally. It's his Dad's bike and has upgraded suspension; RaceTech springs and emulators and a Penske shock. Set up for a 185-200 lb. rider, so it would fit me nicely. It has 19K miles on it. I'd never be able to ride it hard enough to take advantage of the suspension...

There's another one about 2 1/2 hours from me with only 6K on it and full luggage, but not as many farkles as the 19K mile bike. Both about the same price.

For ~$3K more, I can get a LOADED, fully farkled, used 800 Xc with ABS. Going to take a look at it today. I truly can't decide what I like better.

Scott - you need to test ride them, that will give you a much better idea on which bike is with you.

Bring $500 cash with you in case the seller doesn't like the idea of test rides, this will show you are a serious buyer.

I rode the 800 today.....completely farkled out bike. A lot taller than I'm used to, but..man...what a great bike. I'm gonna sleep on it over the weekend, but I'll probably pull the trigger on this one next week.
