Woah, I can't believe that i never heard of this stuff before.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood's_metal

Quote
Wood's metal is commonly used as a filler when bending thin-walled metal tubes. For this use the tubing is filled with molten Wood's metal. After this filler solidifies the tubing is bent. The filler prevents the tube collapsing. The Wood's metal is then removed by heating, often by boiling in water.

Other uses include making custom-shaped apertures and blocks (for example, electron-beam cutouts and lung blocks) for medical radiation treatment, and making metal inlays in wood.

Wood's metal is also useful for repairing antiques. For example, a bent piece of sheet metal may be repaired by casting a Wood's metal die from a good example. The low melting temperature of Wood's metal makes it unlikely this will harm the original. The damaged piece can then be clamped in the die and slowly tightened to form it back into shape.

Wood's metal has long been used by model railroad enthusiasts to add weight to locomotives, increasing traction, and the number of cars that can be pulled.

Neat!

Yeah, I'd like to learn to weld and bend pipe but need to afford a shop w/ electricity, etc. and go half w/ someone w/ $ to start and keep a nice repair business that will grow;I'll be moving to another area soon. The thing about the area i live now is I'm new here and they don't warm up too well to outsiders.. I was glad to find an exhaust/tube shop(even though it's 180 miles away  ::) ) w/ a mandrel bender and we'll be speaking about price..

I sent a few pics to the tube shop and asked a few more questions and it turns out the man only wants(he did say he was 'sorry' though..  ::) ) to do automotive custom jobs..  :(   I'll need to find another shop who will bend me up a single 1.5" stainless steel pipe roughly 30" long for my fun little bike. I have both the inlet and outlet flanges and I'll just need to keep looking;I like the idea of mandrel bending it too.I'll be installing the muffler temporarily along with setting-up/fabricating the muffler mount at the same time so I can 'Go with the Flow'  ;D
I'm in W PA. but willing to transport the bike over to the custom bender dude with-in reason. Do you know anyone not too far from me who isn't afraid to do this?

if those donor pieces are not stainless, you can not weld stainless tubing to them

if so,then I'll change over to regular steel pipe but either way,I'll cross that bridge when i come to it.
The important thing for me at this point is finding an encouraging exhaust person who will do this job for me.

It is a common process.

Any low quality weld can fail.

In my opinion any respectable exhaust shop has a TIG and the skill to weld stainless to mild.

Give these people a call. http://www.oakmontautomotive.net/  I don't know them, but they advertise custom exhaust, aren't real far from you, and have good customer reviews.

I don't mind sending out a 'mock-up' piece of pipe that's bent in the same exact shape as needed to a good custom motorcycle exhaust builder.  Anyone know of a place close to you that you have experience with?

+1

An experienced exhaust welder will have the mild steel properly prepped which means extremely clean, and use a TIG, likely with 309 filler.

There are clearcoats that will withstand the heat and resist corrosion for a long time. Obviously chrome would be an excellent option, as would ceramic coating. Either would be cosmetically pleasing and almost a lifetime finish if cared for.
There's a solution to every problem.

I found another shop  :) who does motorcycle specific exhaust building, Knepper's up in Somerset,PA. He has a mandrel tubing bender also and he wouldn't mind doing the job before the snowmobile season(he is a snowmobile shop+ atv's)gets too busy.I found a tubing supply place up here also who will supply me w/ a length of # 409 SS 1.5" o.d. tubing. Can anyone tell me how thick of a gauge the '409' stainless steel tubing is ??
The man who does the bending is good with '304' thinner SS 1.5"  tubing, but I may need to get extra of the '409' if it's thicker..

I'll be interested in how it turns out. If you've never been to Knepper's, I think you're in for a treat.

I just went to see a new-to-me powersports machinist today who seems 'on the ball' and he spoke to me about  Knepper's in a discouraging way,he told me they aren't precision when it comes to machining, etc.
now I'm just not sure..

I have never personally had any dealings with them, but know some people that have. In their words "there's nothing there but junk". I've been past their place quite a few times and although looks can be deceiving, the building and yard are not very  impressive, but I'd still give them a try.

I have been in touch w/ the owner/tube bender and we have a tentative understanding of "2 weeks"..maybe..  He's busy w/ snowmobiles now and I think this job will take a lot of his time.I've been to Knepper's a few times looking for used parts and every time I  go there the entire place is filled w/ exhaust fumes.I spoke with the owners wife and she says that's very common.. Breathing that stuff all day really works on someone and takes away positive energy from the occupants..  ::)

Do any of you know where i can go to a nationwide type store(Tractor Supply, etc.?)and buy different types of 1.5" exhaust fittings such as elbows-45 & 90 degree type and then I can buy myself a length of 1.5" auto exhaust pipe and just build my own headpipe for my Honda w/ the fittings ?  :)
I went to a traditional muffler shop today and had them bend me up a piece of 1.5" steel pipe but I noticed the hydraulic bending machine does crush in the pipe quite a bit.. plus they do charge big $ for custom bending by the hour.  ::)
