Priming The Oil Pump Completely

So I put the oil pump in pan with about 4-5" deep of oil. I put it so that all the ports were on the bottom and the ports were fully submerged but not deep enough to submerge all of the gears and not deep enough to turn it over while fully submerged. I tilted the portside up a bit while submerged and this burped out more bubbles, but I am wondering if you need to fully submerge and turn it over fully so that ports are the highest submerged part. I turned the gear and got it to flow and bubbles stopped but I am wondering if the flow is good enough. it flowed steadily but it was barely enough to break the surface tension on the oil 1/2" above the port when I would spin the gear pushing it on the sides. it was not shooting up. I put it back in and sealed it up but am worried about first start after rebuild. How can I tell if it was good enough? is it worth taking it out and repeating?

My take:

How much remains after you burp it? Not much and what drains out is obviously replaced by air once again.  If you've had one apart there are no secret pockets inside. At least it gets lubed and has some oil in it. I will do mine this week too but I won't count on it being 'primed'. I will pour 1-1.5 qts in the oil tank and 2 quarts into the valve cover hole to fill the sump so the pump will have something to suck up through the screen.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

 Should be good, if you're in doubt pull the plug out of the oil galley and fill it with a funnel/ hose/ oil gauge adapter with pipe fittings or whatever you can find that does the job. I use a tool that's for adding oil to a cars AC unit and can pressurize the entire oil system for a minute or so, I rotate the motor a little while doing that.

The pump only holds a small amount.  1/2cup maybe...
1.5 Q in the oil tank.  Fill the side galley hole till its full, and the rest up top in #1 & 4 tappet holes.
Start it.
