CB350f rocker shot
« on: March 25, 2016, 05:37:37 AM »
Top end teardown after a blown head gasket revealed deep scratching on one rocker pad and light scratching on its matching cam lobe.  The rest of the surfaces looked normal wear to me, at least no gouges.
In my ignorance, I figured just sand off the scratches on the rocker pad and adjust to compensate.  Evidently after the fact i'm reading that that was a very bad idea.
So I have one bad rocker with a questionable cam lobe.
I'm a cheap, cheap guy (teacher in SD, currently last in the states for teacher pay).
What is my best choice of action?
part it out?
This bike is not a high performance machine, I just use to buzz to school and back, short trips.
I would prefer to just replace the rocker and slap it together for another 5000 miles.
Is that a disastrous idea?
thanks

Cams are $50 or so, rockers can be had for less. I am pretty sure I have a cam laying around and might have some rockers. I have a 350F with a snapped cam chain so I have to see where that's at before I know I can sell, but if you're not in a hurry hit me up in a couple weeks.

At worst, the bike will run unevenly until you have time/$$ to replace the bad parts. I have seen MANY of these bikes running on less-than-four cylinders: if the engine is run often (like commuting service), it is much like with a car: it keeps running, just not all the way up to snuff. ;)
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Would I be able to just buy a decent cam and one rocker, or do I need to buy a whole matched set?
Before I knew the rockers had crome plating, i spent an evening sanding the one to remove the scratches. It looks great now, but I think I sanded off the plating. Think I could run it like that for awhile?
