can you bench sync without taking the carbs off?

Seeing as how BENCH syncing is done on a work BENCH, no...you cannot bench sync them without taking the carbs off.
Unless you can get the whole bike up there, and even then it'll be difficult. ;)

Someone local please go help Dos!

As I told him he can throw his bike on a truck and drive the 4 hours to Syracuse. We can get everything done in a few hours and then grab a beer. Kyle could even come with us. A day well spent!

Spent 2 hours on the phone with him yesterday... he's starting to get it.

Atta Boy! It was obvious someone knowledgeable had talked him off the ledge.

If I lived in NJ, I'd drive my bike anywhere as an excuse to get the Hell out of NJ;D ;D ;D

I think he recently moved from Brooklyn. I work in Brooklyn and I would have definitely stopped by. Could I have helped? Eh, probably not, but he would have had someone to freak out with :))

Gary helped me out which was really great and nice. I went riding and the bike is pretty good. Definitely needs a good sync and the cam chain tensioner needs to be adjusted.

With pilot air screw we are at a full turn out however it ran better at half a turn out for some reason.

The bike stills runs pretty hot and I can't figure that out but it runs at least. Anyone know why it would get so hot?

If anyone is around or in Brooklyn could I stop by or if they could stop by with a vacuum sync kit I would appreciate it ! :)

Running hot is often a symptom of too lean a fuel mixture. A proper plug chop after cam chain adjustment and vacuum SYNCH is in order.

Should I make my own carb sync tool or do you think it's more reliable to just go out and buy one?

Can you explain how to do a plug chop?

Also, I would like to say thank you to everyone for helpin this dingus out and especially to Gary.

Took her for a ride this is how she sounds.. Not to bad cam chain has to get tensioned.   Knocking is still there alittle bit.

When I put the screw driver to my ear down by the bottom end it vibrates up pretty hard

Yes I know! I'm gonna vacuum sync the carbs!

They are also called dampener valves. They are necessary to dampen the gauge needle fluctuation - screw the plastic adjusters all the way in so you don't loose them while putting the tubes onto them. With everything hooked up and the engine running, turn them out until the needle is moving, then back in until the needle fluctuation is only slight.

The metering valves are the little (usually) white knobs/valves in the hoses, about two inches below the gauges. Like jonda said, their purpose is to "calm down" the vacuum signal enough to keep the needles from jumping around wildly. All this sounds hard or exotic, but if you ever saw someone do it just once...

Here we go!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/380985152644?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true

those dampers are split three ways so wont I loose some accuracy if i have one tube going in and the other in in the gauge meaning one is left open? or is that the point?

The gauges in that listing don't seem to have the dampening valves - mine came with four white plastic valves, two long brass tubes and two short,
John
p.s. I had to cut the rubber tubes to insert the valves just below the gauges
- I used a lawnmower fuel tank and a tee piece
