Right. I'm going to check my valve clearance and timing and points gap. That is all the General maintence I can do for now since I don't have a carb sync tool. Is there another way to sync carbs.. Probably not but I'm thinking that maybe it started knocking after I tuned it up once I got it back due to a poor carb sync.

You can get them in the ballpark ..rod synching them...use a drill bit.
Read up on that..and set your valves.

You can adjust the cam chain, too.
I'd buy or borrow a vacuum gauge set. Do the 3K mile tune up and sync the carbs. You may be surprised what that will get you.

Yeah I am going to do all the tuneups I just got depressed with the bike..

I also have a creeping suspicion though that these guys that touched my bike may have not done a good job putting the engine back together so it would be nice to have someone help out and see if the tuneup really would fix the problem.

If anyone is in NJ or around feel free to message.

I think you think the 3k mile tune up is more of an investment in time than it really is.

I listened to the videos again and the sounds the engine makes are odd. When it's cold, everything sounds fine. After warming up a bit it has that noticeable knock. Your camera might be amplifying certain sounds too, so what I'm hearing might not be accurate. I think you should get a buddy who knows engines to take a look at it, or even take it back to the mechanic who did the work on it.

yeah that's what I'm saying it would be cool if someone who knows this engine after I do the tuneup they can still take a listen and say yeah you were just being a dingus it's fine or.. o yeah tuneup made the bike run alittle better but that knocking sounds alittle weird still.

So did you at least set the valves yet..should only take 1/2 hr..
Rod synching the carbs  about 40 minutes.. Maybe a bit longer getting airbox on..
At least try to fix it instead of hoping for an internet solution..
I mean your valves have around triple the clearance they should have..thats going to make some noise.

I still don't hear anything but a bad tune up and sync. Maybe there is something more, but you'll never be sure until you tune it properly and see what happens.

Hey guys!

I am going to be working on the bike this weekend it seems alittle warmer.. for now!

IN the event that regular maintenance can't fix this and it is a minor engine related problem.. is there anyone that can help?
Just want to be prepared.

Disregard, I see you're in Montclair. If you haven't already, get a Clymer manual or Honda service manual, and take it step by step

Hope you make some progress this weekend, and try to take it one step at a time. I know sometimes all you can think about is everything at once which seems like a monumental task, but the people on this forum really know their stuff. I also have 4 Genuine Honda carburetor rebuild kits should you need them.

Hey guys,

So I had time to do the tuneup.. I checked my points gap and my timing and fixed that but I am having some trouble with my valve clearance.
Everytime I go to T1.4 and check my valves there seems to be only play in either the exhaust or intake not both.. This leads me to believe that my head may have gotten warped.. again if there is anyone around the Northern Jersey NYC region I'd gladly pay alittle bit for a tuneup and evaluation. I am 65% sure that this might be internal engine problems due to a #$%*ty mechanic but I can't make this decisions with the small amount of knowledge and not even a full tune up

if you are checking #1 cyl exh and intake for play, and you only have play in one of these....rotate the crank 360 deg and check again.,

....or leave it where it is and see that there is play in both the intake and exhaust of #4.

Its extremely unlikely that the head or cover is warped, so you can allay your fears over that. What is more likely is that the rocker itself is eithe worn, or the valve/guide is. But that would only yield a mild issue when running. If your bike is not felling "tight and tuned" then a good tune-up and carb synch should help the most.

You have to bear in mind, its 35+ year old bike. They will have good days and bad. And ownership means taking on a few projects outside your comfort zone. You won't blow anything up, so don't fear undertaking these things with a good manual, some pictures, and posing a few questions here.

If I lived near enough by, I'd come up, tune you up, and spank you for being a scaredy-cat  ;) But seriously, you can do this stuff. Follow the recommendations made, don't presume failure or devastation before its done, and go slowly. We are all here (virtually) to support you.

Okay. I only say warped head because when i rode it back from brooklyn it was getting very hot and smoking. I feel that may have done it.  I don't know though guys I think I am throwing the white flag up here and being a lazy ass.

You've been given a ton of very helpful and constructive advice already, yet seem insistant on ignorning it.

You bought an old bike, your options are pretty simple.... Bite the bullet, humble yourself, get a service manual and read up, roll up your sleeves, and figure out how to work on it or roll the dice with mechanics.

That doesn't mean it got hot enough to warp the head.  These are 40+/- year old bikes.  smoking, leaking oil, running rough....find me one that didn't need some tuning (or more) after it was purchased by someone on this forum  ::)

So...did you get the valve lash dialed in yet?
