Any diff between CB500 and CB550 clutch plates?
« on: May 16, 2005, 06:58:15 PM »
I've got a set of Barnett Kevlar clutch plates designated as for the CB500 - 7 friction plates.  Any diff beween these and the CB550 plates?  Did the CB500 have the one different plate like the 550 (and what's so different about it anyhow?)

Well, I've only worked on the CB550 clutch.  A few years ago, at that.  So, someone else may have a better answer.  But, I know the clutch was a major design renovation between the CB500 and the CB550 as the 500 had parts from an older 350 twin design and was quite marginal for the 500's power.  I really wouldn't expect any of the clutch parts to interchange between CB500 and CB550.  I'd be rather fearful of bringing the 500s clutch foibles into the 550.  But, I could be wrong...  Doesn't the 550 have 8 friction plates?  I think that's what I count in the Honda Manual.

Best of luck, though...

The mega-download 550 manual available on this site (originally from tintin) has a section on the differences between the 500 and the 550 (including the clutch).

Go to the FAQs for links to both manuals.

As the proud owner of one of tintin's CDs, I can say that I have "read the manual" (well not all of it...)

I found the "differences" section the most interesting as it has exploded diagrams and part numbers for the different parts.

Go to barnettclutches.com to find out about clutch applications.  It looks like you may be out of luck as the steel plates and friction plates are different for the CB500 and 550.  The 500 uses 7 HPK-60A friction plates and 6 HP2-12 steel plates.  The 550 uses 6 545-3A friction plates and one HPK-14B friction plate and 6 HP-2-20 steel plates.  I recently bid on some CB500 Barnett friction plates on Ebay and lost so I have done some research.

As always the Parts Lists tell the story. All CB500 and CB550 owners should be aware there have been modifications. http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb500 and http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb550 All owners are advised to consult the Parts Lists. You can determine your specific model by comparing your engine- and framenumber to the numbers listed in the first few pages of forsaid parts lists. You will also learn about the carbnumber and the 'area code' of your model. Going there (Honda4Fun) yourself saves all of us here a lot of unnecessary questions. So... recommended.
