Thoughts on non o-ring chain
« on: January 10, 2016, 02:45:36 PM »
I'm ordering new 630 sprockets and a chain for my cb750k7.   Is a o-ring chain really necessary?

The O-ring chain will last you 2-3 times longer(if maintained) w/ less lubrication intervals and excellent for long rides but it's a bit heavier than a standard chain.

+1, the original o-ring 630 chain on my F3 lasted 36 years/26,000 miles and was never well cared for
If it works good, it looks good...

I had a new brand new 2003 Honda CR 250 rode it about 6-8 times broke the stock OEM chain. It slammed into the crank case in front of the front sprocket. It put a hole into the crank case about the size of a quarter. I had to push the bike home. When I got home I laid the bike on it's side cleaned the broken crankcase and put  JB Weld on my brand new bike! !@#$%^&*()  BUY a GOOD Chain!

Standard chains are stronger than they used to be, some obviously better than others. Not sure about the 750K7, but on CB550s some o-ring chains wear away a seal under the cover and cause an oil leak that can only be repaired by splitting the cases -- make sure your fitment is good if you go with an o-ring.

Another thing, due to the strength of 520/530/525 chains made now, there is no need for the extremely heavy 630 chains any more, all modern superbikes, with up too 4 times as much power as our old bikes, use 520/525/530 size chains... I would use the 530 conversion with a good O ring or X ring chain...

I don't think you can get a non-oRing in 630, can you?  Even if, get the ORing.

I concur with the others who say now's the time to convert to a 530 Oring.

I would go 530 with a high tensile non o-ring chain from a quality company.

Parasitic loss... is a real drag... ;D

Your K7 and my K8 came with 630 chains. To swap them put is so simeple rather than convert. They look cooler too.

Converting to a 530 chain makes perfect sense but why one would not go with an "o-ring" style is beyond me.

"O-ring" style chains are internally lubricated, low maintenance (just keep clean & shot of WD40) and outlast non o-ring by a wide margin. Once up to operating temp the resistance is negligible over non o-ring chains.

Pro MX & SX Teams use non o-ring chains but replace them every weekend.

Top level off road enduro & hare scramble racers use "o-ring" style chains. They replace the chain when they wear out the countershaft sprocket. I could go through two countershaft sprocket before replacing the chain and the chain is still within spec! The only maintence was hose it off and WD40. We run in sand, water, mud and slurries of all three...you get that in your rollers and pins on a non o-ring chain and it's toast very quickly.

As soon as the CB550 I've got needs a sprocket or chain I'll be converting it over to a 530 o-ring setup.

Cheers,
Kenzo

Because the resistance is NOT negligable to some people. Some people want to wring every last bit of free power they can out of their bikes.

Of course pro racers replace their chains every weekend. They get them for free from their sponsors.

Longevity is determined by quality.

Both configurations have their upsides.

X-ring chains haven't really entered the discussion yet.

I think most of us manage to stay out of the dirt.
Oiling the chain a few times a day on a long ride is a zen like thing to me...part of the ritual...

I read some where that these bikes have "oilers" on them.  Is that true?  I haven't actually looked or read in my manual yet to find it.

Being able to switch to an o-ring chain is one of the best things about going to the 650 engine in my 550.  I am super excited.  If my garage wasn't an icebox, I would get out there and get this swap done.
