Topic: How to test starter

Hi guys, my solenoid clicks but the starter doesn't move. I want to jump the starter directly to test it but have no idea how. Can someone post pics on where I should connect the wires to jump it? Does it have to be removed from the bike? So far I've only removed the starter cover and now I'm stuck.. 1975 cb750

Turn the key on,take a screwdriver and jump across the 2 large terminals on the solenoid/relay.the starter should turn over.if it doesnt,starter is shot or there is a wiring issue downstream

I tried but nothing happened. It could be my wiring, that's why I wanna test the starter directly

Shorting the solenoid like that eliminates the wiring as a problem, for the most part.  At that point you're feeding +12v directly into the starter's main lead, it should spin at that point.

Sure your battery isn't dead?

Battery is good I even tried my cars battery. Solenoid just clicks when I press the start button

One thing I'm unsure about is one of the wires, from the solenoid it is green/red but my new wiring harness doesn't have that color so I hooked it up to the black wire since it was paired with the yellow/red.

I highly recommend this video.  I think Max does a great job with his diagram of showing how the various components work in layman's terms.  But if you just want the demonstration of how to test the starter, jump to the 5:00 mark of the video.

Wow, that helped a lot! I think I may know the problem. I realized that I have nothing connected to the other solenoid lead. I'm not sure if this green wire is supposed to be the ground wire for it? I've looked at multiple diagrams but couldn't figure it out

You should be able to just connect the positive to the post and then the ground wire to the body of the starter like Max did in that video.  If you do that, be aware that it'll jump as it starts to spin. 
If you do so, it'll let you know whether or not the starter itself is good.  Once you know that, then you can start to diagnose where else the issue might be if the starter proves to be ok.

You can ground the solenoid to the frame or to the negative of the battery, if necessary.  I grounded mine to the frame.  Just make sure that you have a clean connection to bare metal.

No it's not necessary.  My solenoid connects directly to the positive on my battery.  As a matter of fact, I don't know that I've seen a fuse between the solenoid & the battery on a diagram before.  I don't doubt that some do it but you don't have to.

No it's not necessary.  My solenoid connects directly to the positive on my battery.  As a matter of fact, I don't know that I've seen a fuse between the solenoid & the battery on a diagram before.  I don't doubt that some do it but you don't have to.

Ahh ok. Yeah, I've seen diagrams with and some without. But I guess it'll do without it.

I helped a buddy get his 75 CB750 going recently and his wiring diagram didn't call for it either. 

If you have the standard SOHC wiring system, you're going to have 3 fuses.  But those are in the fuse block and aren't set up to be between the solenoid and the battery.

heh OK didn't know you were starting from such as disassembled state.

On the big posts for the solenoid (which is just a big electrically-actuated switch), one connection is for the starter lead, the other connection is for the positive battery cable, which connects directly to the positive battery post.  Do you have this?



For the small connections to the solenoid, runs to the starter button (yellow+red) (which provides ground) and the other connects to +12V from the harness (black).  Looks like you've got those hooked up right, but I would recommend you get rid of those wire nuts and use something better (assume you're just using them for debugging).

A k5 should have a fusebox with three fuses, a 15A main fuse, a 7A headlight fuse, and a 3A tail light fuse.  This connects to a modular connector under the left side cover.

I just did this last night on my bike. I've got it pretty stripped down but decided I want to do a compression test before I go in. To jump it with the wiring harness disconnected you hook the battery up like normal. Run a jumper from battery positive to the big starter wire on the solenoid. Disconnect the small black wire to the solenoid and touch it on positive. This will turn your starter.

Put a jumper on the solenoid contacts. That will bump it.
