$200 budget for front and rear tires
« on: January 10, 2016, 11:32:06 PM »
I'm looking for tires that last a long time and grip really well in the wet. 1978 CB750k. Driving is standard street stuff. Nothing high speed or fancy. I hate riding in the rain but want to have some kind of confidence if I have to do it. Rims have spokes if that matters. What do you recommend?

These are what I use on my '78k........

Dunlop D404  ...100/90-19; 130/90-17

less than your budget shipped.

You will likely get other recommendations as well.

You, of course, realize that you are asking for conflicting attributes.  Good grip, especially in the wet, requires a softer rubber compound.  Softer compounds do not last as long.  Durability requires a harder compound.  Harder compounds don't grip as well...then there are dual compound.  Hard in the center for durability, soft on the sides for grip...but its gonna be tough to meet your budget.  Good luck.
If it works good, it looks good...

I have Dunlop Arrowmax Street Smart.
http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.eu/dunlop_euen/mc/tyres/on_road/Arrowmax%20StreetSmart.jsp
front 100/90-19V   rear 120/90-18V

Seems to be better than  my previous Metzeler LaserTec that had very short life on rear.

seanbarney is right.
your budget is not that bad if you shop around but you may end up exceeding it a bit. get the tyres that work best for your kind of riding and the conditions where you ride. at the moment when they slip out out from under you, the price of a pair of tyres will be the least of your worries.

i use bridgestone bt45 myself. it rains quite often here and they do ok, i'm happy with them.

mycoal,

I run Continental RB2 (front) and K112 (rear).  They grip pretty good and wear pretty well.

Kenda Challengers work for me. Even with new tubes, rim strips and free shipping you're within the $200 budget:

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/6097/i/kenda-k657-challenger-rear-tire

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/6096/i/kenda-k657-challenger-front-tire

Haven't had them long enough to determine how many miles they will last, but they are reasonably priced.

Not that hard actually, in Superstore:

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/6012/i/bridgestone-battlax-bt-45-sport-touring-front-tire

Or you could go Shinko:

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/6205/i/shinko-712-rear-tire

I used Shinko 712 myself on Dorothy, took her through tail of the dragon fully loaded and never had a problem.

Pirelli Sport Demons on my 78K.  I've really enjoyed them.  I only have about 800 miles on Stella since the rebuild but so far the tires aren't even showing signs of wear.

I am not sure about tire having to be soft to work well in rain, i thought it had mote to do with getting water out of the way to prevent hydroplaning... That said, Brit brands always seem to work well in rain.they would have no tiresales if that were not true..

Frank is onto something there, here in the UK we regularly test the all weather performance- I did this morning, again...

I'm not sure about US prices and the $200 target,  but for great wet weather performance and decent wear you ought to consider Avon AM26s.

I loved the Avon AM26s on my 350F, but with new rim strips/tubes/mounting/balance, you're looking at near $300
