painting engine case
« on: January 10, 2016, 07:58:12 PM »
Hi. I'm just after some advise please regarding painting the engine (the bottom only as from the barrel up is ok). I have pulled the engine out and soda blasted it. There was heavy oxidisation which i have sanded most of and now am running over with a 3M scotchbrite wheel.
Question is does all the oxidisation need to be removed prior to paint. Please see photos for job so far. Thankyou. Mike.

If the surface is clean, degreased, and wiped down with acetone or similar, then you can leave the oxidation. The paint/primer will cover it.

+2, and the 'wipe down with acetone' or any solvent part is very important.
A acetone wet white cloth wipe-down will show you where surface contaminants remain.  Wear gloves and be diligent.

I changed my Moto Guzzi casings from this.....

.....to this.....

.....by degreasing them with Jizer, taking the oxidation off with POR15 Metal Ready and painting them with POR15 engine enamel.

6 years late the paint is still on having resisted petrol and acid spills.
