78 cb550 kill switch wiring query
« on: January 12, 2016, 12:07:48 AM »
Hi all

Just finishing complete rewire of my cb550 project, however the kill switch
Has me stumped. Every diagram shows the black and black/white wire running through it, however my switch has the black and white wire which only has continuity in the 'off' position to a green wire? The black wire has nothing to do with kill on this switch.  Surely earthing the coils to stop it would cause problems with blowing fuses?? All other wiring fine and working. Cheers!

All solid GREEN wires are GROUNDs. BLACK, BLK/WHT are switched 12v. The solid BLK comes form the key, energizes the right side controls, then transfers power to BLK/WHT thru KILL when in the RUN position. BLK/WHT then feeds the coils. This is why with the key ON, coils are hot. With KILL in off position, coils are cold.

If you have somehow connected BLK or BLK/WHT to GREEN, you will blow fuses immediately.

Every color stays the same through every connections; its what makes it easy to troubleshoot. The only time they switch colors is when they become "Striped" passing through a switch.

So to recap:
BLK inbound from key to RH control
BLK to KILL
BLK/WHT from KILL to coils
GREEN always to chassis GROUND

For some reason this switch only has two feeds to the kill switch, green and black/white which are connected in off position. The black is not connectd to this switch in any way. I have no idea why but will blow fuses if set this way?! Infuriating.

Is it the stock control unit? If so, the BLK runs to the unit through the pigtail. The KILL switch has a jumper to transfer BLK to BLK/WHT in RUN position. The GREEN is a permanent ground. Else, someone has altered the wiring from stock interpreting BLK and BLK/WHT as NEG/GRND.

Pulled the switch apart, this kill switch has green wired to the off position and black/white on its own at run position. There is three brass contacts as opposed to two anywhere else ive seen. Odd.

How about posting some pictures of the outside and internals. Also, is this a stock control unit??
