Our system is broke and no amount of voting will fix it. We need a
complete removal of all parties involved and a secession of all States
making up this forced union. Then a reforming of smaller unions if the
States desire it. This isn't going to happen by vote.

these are midterm elections, local elections. STATE elections. If you are concerned with states rights and smaller government, these are the elections you should be informed about and voting in. And we as voters do have the power to change the leadership in congress this go round (percentagewise) which would be a real step towards the checks and balances that are suposed to make our government of for and by the people. or you can just #$%* about it. I'm just glad people are talking about it. because you are right most races are between #$%* A and #$%* B and i dont really care if you vote for A or B, but if more people voted i do think we would get better As and Bs to choose from. more people would be vote-in-able, if the people who dont vote started to.

i dont think this will be achieved until there is some serious outreach, as well as the institution of the 'NO' vote, whereby if a voter does not want to positively vote for any (who are we kidding, i mean either) candidate, can vote no to the candidate they least want to get the job. The one with the most positive votes wins. If two parties became so big and powerful that they shut out any competition in the public forum and monopolized things like debates, they would be the recipients of the most negative votes as well. popularity would have a double edge and they would start canceling each other out and the third parties of this country would get voted in on the relatively small amount of positive votes they already get. this would inspire a climate of hope and faith in governement, leading those of us alienated by our government to decide to take over and make positive change.

so just go #$%*ing vote.

I find it very interesting that the sort of comments/discussion we are seeing here should be here at all, since we are talking about the only remaining world superpower.....

Remember that political parties do not win elections. Rather, the previous party-in-power pisses so many people off that they lose the election, by default, to the next party in line. Unfortunately in the US there are only two choices.

Successive years of lies, outright corruption, and individual greed by those that have power has lead the normal average person completely disenchanted with politics at all levels. The politicians have no one but themselves to blame for this loss of respect and interest from the general public. Once a feeling of hopelessness overtakes a voter, it takes a real effort to sway them back. In other words an arttitude of "Who cares, they are all the same corrupt pigs feeding at the trough."

this is the reason for the NO vote.
then voting would be a way of expressing your support or your alienation. enough NO votes and the parties get fined, that will get some better candidates up there. before we will see anything but pigs at the trough we need to study the trough and find out why it draws pigs- then fix it. not enough people have the time/energy/education to critically think about their governement, which lately here, has been actively misinforming those who attempt.

I also think the trough draws pigs because "Absolute power corrups absolutely." Isn't that how the saying goes? I bet most politicians start off with good intentions. Then they forget where they came from and just want more power.

that sounds like 'incremental power corrupts incrementally,' which i do believe. the best i can come up with is the hierarchy of politics lends itself to those ambitious enough to have fuzzy morals. even if they dont start out that way, incremental power corrupts their vision incrementally so that they dont notice until they are right there in the trough fighting to get enough.

Voting would be much less of a pain if we were not forced to go to the polls only to express our dischantment. Regardless of the poliitical party in power or whether one group or the other leads the House, Senate, or the White House, those in Washington today fall far short of what Americans should get. There are far too many politicians in Washington & not enough Statesmen. How nice it would be to know that our government is not bound to special interests, lobbies, editorials or their own party, and would serve their constiuents with some small bit of intestinal fortitude so they might be able to have some self-respect each day.

Well in Oz, voting is compulsory, but even if it wasn't, I'd still vote. I can't believe that you guys have all got such strong opinions about what's wrong with your country, but you can't be bothered getting off your collective asses to change it?

Here in Oregon we have vote by mail to increase turn-out. The system's security is very flawed and the state shows no interest in admitting there's a problem let alone fixing it. Turn out numbers here are declining just like the rest of the country, except we have no sense of community by joining our neighbors at the polls.
