What to expect riding a 76 Hondamatic CB750a

 I just purchased a 76 750a it's new to me. I have ridden and raced bikes forever. But this is a different animal to me. The bike starts right up and runs awesome. Not sure what to expect when I ride it. It seems to fight me when I stop and leave it in gear it wants to keep going. So I put it in neutral at stops. When I put it gear it goes and if I am on level ground it will go 40mph without me touching the accelerator. Is that normal? If not what could be the reason for it to move on its own at that speed? It scares me in stop and go traffic because of this. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The 750A uses a unique idle system. The idle screw (similar to other 750s) is used to set the idle when not in gear and there is a vacuum operated idle screw to set the idle when in gear. If the carbs have been replaced with a set from a 750K, they will not have the proper servo and control solenoid.

Syncing the carbs and setting a lower idle should help.  But like any automatic vehicle, it goes if you let go of the brake.

The A has a electric solenoid that kicks the idle up when in gear it has its own adjustment  screw. If it is idling fine in neutral and is pulling in gear the in gear idle is set way to high. My 76 dose not pull at all in gear.

On the right side front of carb thumb screw is not in gear idle adjustment on right side rear of carb small screw with spring is in gear idle adjusment

If it's stock carbs, you should be able to adjust to get it pretty smooth at lights. K carbs diff story!!

mine does just fine at lights in gear and in neutral just need to take your time to adj
