oil pump
« on: January 19, 2016, 01:18:29 PM »
I just rebuild my starter clutch on my 82 nighthawk 650, do I need to prime the oil pump? If so what would be the best way?
Thanks
Pete

I've heard people on the forum saying to submerse it in oil and spin the gear until you don't see bubbles anymore then slap it on.

Probably a good idea to hold the starter button and crank the motor (with fuel off and maybe coils disconnected) until the oil light goes off. Then fire it up.

I always crank with kill switch off till the light goes out - 45 seconds or so after oil change.

But if you did not pull the oil pump, chances are it is still full of oil.

Oh yeah, kill switch, duh. Much easier than disconnecting the coils. :))

The starter clutch and the oil pump are not related and there is no need to "prime" it. As noted kill switch off and crank the motor until the oil light goes out and bingo you have oil pressure and oil circulated within the motor.

Common sense.....isn't so common!
