Author Topic: Machine Shop in Atlanta GA (Read 6888 times)

Guys, I'm in the process of rebuilding my CB750 motor and need a good machine shop in Atlanta GA. Any recommendations? I'm thinking about having the cylinders bored and valves lapped. In the past I've gone the cheap way and just replaced the rings and seals and that's fine. Typically, I'm a little unhappy as something isn't perfect. I've got a couple of options and wanted to know the forum's thoughts.

1 - have the cylinders measured and valves lapped, just cross hatch the jugs if OK and bolt it back together. what is the cost for a machine shop to inspect and lap?
2 - have the cylinders bored to the next size (+.25mm) and buy new pistons (@ $300 from Vintage CB750). what is the cost (guess) or boring to the next size? +.50mm oversize parts are the same cost.
3 - 836?

Will I have to change the carb and cams for the 836? I'm not interested in making it fast, just right and tight.

they do all my motorcycle stuff and i have regretted in the past when i tried to *save* money elsewhere..

No, you wont. My K4 is a 836, and it pulls from a stock 750.

$50/hole is the cost of boring 'round these parts, recently had my [three] H2 cylinders done.

Also, I happen to know the Star Racing people in Americus from many years ago when I to school there. Good people.

If you cant take it there and have access to tablesaw.. Make boxes to protect head and cylinder.. .
If you dont , you will wish you had.. And you use them over and over..

It's cheaper to buy a CruzinImage 836 kit than the price you listed for +0.25mm pistons. $50/hole is about right for most shops. Bill Benton is in Alpharetta and aside from Ron's recommendation, Bill I'm sure knows every shop between Orlando and Toronto, and west to Memphis.

I don't believe Bill does any actual machining, but he is extremely skilled at assembly and recipes for good performance.

Cruzin Image now also has +.5mm (62.5mm 2nd over) and +1mm (63mm 4th over) at $100 for the set of four.

and yes, Bill is a builder, not a machinist, but I figured if anybody knew machinists in Atlanta he would.

Americus, GA is a few hours away (2.5hr according to Google). I'm near Decatur Ga. Sounds like I should reach out to Benton and see if he knows anyone in Atlanta. If I can can get holes machined for $50 each ($200 total) and piston sets for $100 ($188 for 836cc), that's pretty cheap. Any pros or cons I should know about? Bigger is typically better, and given modern oils, mild setup, mature driving...the sleeves thickness shouldn't be an issue. Also, what (if anything) should I do about the valves? ...or should I just ask Benton?

Bill lives in Alpharetta. Unless he's found one he likes within the last year, he doesn't have a machine shop here in Atlanta he trusts. When Logan broke off the screw in the engine case on Stella this time last year, I took it to one I found because Bill didn't have one he recommended.

As cal stated, he sends his heads to Mike Rieck to have them done.

I doubt you'll want to drive down to Americus. From you, it is indeed about a 2.5 hour drive (down I-75 to Cordele then turn west to Americus). But there isn't a whole lot to do there unless you want to go visit Plains (about 10 - 15 miles away). You'd do better to ship it there (or to MRieck) and just wait on it to be shipped back.

If you are shipping anything anywhere for machine work, ship it all to Mike. The results are guaranteed and the wait time is worth it. My opinion. Plus, if thats where Bill sends his, then thats where I'd send mine.

Sounds like I'm shipping this thing. I was hoping to hand deliver locally. What's the best way to ship? Build a wood box? UPS? never shipped a motor before.

Separate the head from the jugs. Ship separately in cardboard boxes, wrapping each piece in bubble wrap. Fill with peanuts, snug it all up. Ship it away and insure it. Send your pistons with the jugs so the machinist can verify diameter and piston/bore clearances.

I shipped a disassembled motor last year.

The absolute best way is to use a heavy duty plastic storage container. I used rigid foam insulation [very inexpensive] to surround and separate the parts, be sure there is no movement of parts within the container, use additional shipping matierals as needed.
Finally, install the lid and secure with zip ties.
I used UPS and insured the shipment for full value.

You've got several choices in the Atlanta area to include Cooper Performance and Rockdale Cycle. Star is a great choice as well. And don't forget Kim at Carolina Cycle up in Salisbury,NC. He's done several heads and transmissions for me some years ago at a great price and he can bore the cylinders for you too. He helps a lot of the TQ midget guys with SOHC builds in the past.
