Title status: Parts only
« on: January 14, 2016, 04:25:32 PM »
Is that an indication to run - not walk, away from such a bike?

I'm seeing a reasonable investment on Thieveslist, I mean Craigslist, and the only thing that bothers me is 1)  the price is WAY low  2)  the title is "Parts Only".

I have no intention of anything short of a full rebuild regardless of the bike's condition - so it being a POS doesn't bother me anyway.  But I don't want to find out that the title status is permanent and essentially guarentees I'll never sell the bike no matter how well it gets restored.

I did some poking around and it seems that with that 'parts only' title it can't even be ridden.

At that point it would only be used for parts (like the title says).  Sucks.

I suppose I could still pick it up for the price and look around for one that it's bad shape but still titled.

Looking that way.  I sent a letter to the DOL asking if they'll clarify what it means.

Georgia has no titles for over a certain age. I think Kansas may be the same way.

Oklahoma has title 42 where you might get a storage lien, other states might do the same.

Sounds like it might be out of the title state's database (?)

I think there would be ways to gain marketable title.

Remarkably I got a reply from the Dept of Licensing on "Parts Only" title status.

Their conclusion - "Can be used for parts only, may not be ridden on public roadways ever."

Parts only means parts only in the State of Washington, and can never be changed no matter what you do to the bike.  I suppose that was done to prevent insurance fraud and fraudulent used car sales.

That took some digging to get that info
 Thanks.
we should compile a title info page and try and update it when possible.

Rob, if the bike is more than 10 yrs old you could go the Vermont route. They don't title bikes after 10 but it is a transferable registration if you decided to sell some time down the road.  ;)
